Job description

We are looking for a creative and collaborative Organizer to join the Common Cause team in New York. This is a key role supporting our organizing and outreach programs and promoting civic engagement across the state.
This is a full-time role reporting to the Organizing Manager, New York; this role is based in New York, with a focus on Long Island and the Hudson Valley; there will be an expectation to come into our office and travel around the state at least three days per week. We hope our new Organizer will start in October.
Responsibilities
Grow, diversify, and engage supporters
  • Support activities to grow, diversify, and engage our base of supporters
  • Participate in engaging, nonpartisan education and outreach activities to expand awareness of our work
  • Assist with events, campaigns, and projects, such as election protection work, legislative campaigns, lobby days, and other work
  • Collaborate with other staff to promote activities through social media and other communication channels
  • Assist in developing compelling communication materials for outreach efforts
  • Manage discrete projects within the election protection program
  • Manage discrete projects within digital communications, including drafting email communications and website updates
  • Act as a representative of Common Cause at community events and coalition meetings
  • Build and maintain relationships with community partners and members

Support our research and advocacy efforts
  • Assist with research and advocacy efforts on democracy issues
  • Assist in tracking legislative developments relevant to our work
  • Collaborate with volunteers and interns to support our work

Support fundraising and advisory board management
  • Support the State Director and other staff in fundraising efforts, including donor cultivation, grant support, and reporting for foundations and major donors
  • Assist with administrative tasks for the state advisory board, including meeting attendance and coordination, logistics, and preparation of materials

  • Ability to meet deadlines for multiple projects at once, with attention to detail, and a resourceful approach to solving problems
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with office productivity tools including Microsoft Office, Slack, and Zoom; ideally you have familiarity with Word Press, Canva, Google Suite, and social media platforms

The following is required:
  • Willing to have a social media presence on behalf of Common Cause, including being tagged on posts and creating content on behalf of the organization (as needed, Common Cause may provide accounts for staff members to use)
  • Ability to travel 1-2 times per year for team and/or all staff retreats
  • Ability to work in-person in the state office and at various locations around the state up to three days per week
  • Per our nonpartisan policy, Common Cause staff members may not currently be in elected office (or running for office); on the Steering Committee or Finance Committee for any political candidate; or affiliated with the leadership of a political party

Additional information about this role:
  • This position is included in a union-represented collective bargaining unit and specific employment terms and conditions are subject to collective bargaining negotiations
  • Common Cause is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time; please note that if hired, you will be asked to produce documentation for authorization to work in the US

$65,776 - $82,750 a year
