Job description

Overview

PenFed is hiring a (Hybrid) Observability Engineer II at our Tysons, Virginia location. The primary purpose of this job is to lead the design, implementation, and ongoing support of enterprise observability and monitoring capabilities. This role is primarily focused on observability, leveraging Dynatrace and LogicMonitor to provide deep visibility into application performance, infrastructure health, and critical business services. This role also supports DevOps and platform enablement efforts by integrating observability into CI/CD pipelines, release processes, and operational workflows.


Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities: Observability

  • Design, implement, and operate enterprise observability solutions using Dynatrace and LogicMonitor.
  • Configure and maintain application performance monitoring (APM), infrastructure monitoring, synthetic monitoring, logs, alerting, and dashboards.
  • Build service views, business dashboards, and health indicators for critical platforms.
  • Define alerting standards, noise reduction strategies, and proactive detection practices.
  • Support incident triage, root cause analysis, and post-incident reviews.
  • Support capacity planning, performance trend analysis, and availability reporting.

Secondary responsibilities: DevOps and Platform Enablement

  • Integrate observability into CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows.
  • Support post-deployment validation and release health checks.
  • Collaborate with DevOps and platform teams to improve release visibility and operational readiness.
  • Provide observability support for platforms such as Salesforce, Java, MuleSoft, and Mobile applications.

Qualifications

Equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 6+ years of experience in observability, monitoring, SRE, or platform operations roles.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Dynatrace and LogicMonitor.
  • Strong understanding of observability concepts including metrics, logs, traces, alerting, and RCA.
  • Experience supporting enterprise-scale, high-availability systems.
  • Working knowledge of Windows, Linux, and infrastructure concepts.
  • Knowledge of GitHub, VS Code, and CI/CD tools and processes.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools to improve productivity and automation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience integrating observability with DevOps and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with Salesforce platform monitoring and SaaS observability.
  • Working knowledge of scripting languages (Python, Bash, Ruby, etc.).
  • Experience using AI-assisted coding tools for automation or configuration tasks.
  • Certification or training in AI-assisted development or code assistants (AWS or similar) is a plus.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred).
  • Experience using A.I. tools preferred.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position will supervise employees.

Licenses and Certifications

There are no additional certifications required.
 

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to an indoor office setting with moderate noise.

Travel

Ability to travel to various worksites and be on call will be required.
