Job Summary

Library Aides are the frontline for library service and require delivery of excellent customer service and strong interpersonal skills. This position performs a variety of library related tasks such as assisting patrons at the public service desk, demonstrates information literacy, processes library materials, assists with computer related tasks and new technologies, interlibrary loan requests and processes, assists librarians with programs and other library duties as assigned. Evenings and weekends are required. May assist at other library locations.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills

Knowledge of commonly used work routines, rules, procedures, or operations; ability to use specialized equipment.
Must be able to use Integrated Library System (ILS) to create, evaluate and clear patron records correctly when collecting payments; maintaining confidentiality is essential when inputting and reviewing patron records in ILS.
Must have knowledge of electronic devices and apps used by library resources.
Assist patrons with copiers, digital microfilm reader/scanners and other equipment common to library environment.
Promote and assist with library programs and resources to patrons.
Sorts and distributes mail, prepares newspapers and serials for public area.
Performs all tasks related to opening and closing procedures.
Assists with daily deposit.
Shelves library materials.
Maintain a clean and safe library environment.
Answering incoming phone calls and assisting with patron queries.

Minimum Education & Experience

High school graduate or GED is required.
2 years of customer service experience, library experience, cash handling experience, office experience or some equivalent combination is preferred.

Special Certifications & Licenses

Valid Texas Driver's License.

Independence & Judgement

Minimal judgment: instructions, once established and defined, normally allow the job to be accomplished without direct and/or constant supervision; mostly routine work requiring that employee recognize obvious problems; situations outside the instructions are referred to the supervisor or lead worker.

Initiative & Ingenuity

Low chance of error because work is routine/repetitive/simple/reviewed carefully; standard procedures: don't have to come up with creative solutions; refers anything unusual to supervisor.

Supervisory & Responsibility

Does not supervise.

Financial Responsibility

Takes money (fines, fees, etc.), gives receipts, does own balancing; no decision making; authorizes payment of accounts payable based on matching invoices; handles petty cash; makes purchases over $200.

Level & Frequency of Outside Contact

Frequent contact with the public or other organizations; interactions may require obtaining cooperation of people; courtesy and tact are required when dealing with moderately difficult or sensitive issues.

Physical Demands

Office job with little or occasional light physical effort. Performs light work that involves walking or standing most of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis.

Responsible for use of equipment/property such as office equipment, supplies, etc., which are used in office.
