Job Description:

As a Network Operational Resident Engineer, you will deliver reactive and proactive activities according to Service Level Agreement to ensure customer satisfaction and loyalty. Provides direct post-sales systems on-site technical support for reactive and proactive customers. This role will maintain a high level of customer satisfaction by ensuring clear business and technical solution alignment, clarifying customer needs and ensuring that they are met. This role is responsible for company Total Customer Experience as well as the revenue growth, profitability, and account retention.

This position will require you to be on site at the client site in Columbus, OH 5 days a week.


Role Responsibilities

  • Conduct network information-gathering workshops to understand the customer's existing environment, architecture, and requirements for new designs.
  • Analyze the customer's organizational structure, implementation processes, and operational procedures to ensure sustainable and highly available network solutions.
  • Design, test, and validate new features, functionality, and network architectures in a lab environment prior to production deployment.
  • Develop and execute implementation and validation plans to ensure successful deployment in the production network.
  • Test and validate software patches and fixes in pre-production environments prior to live deployment.
  • Troubleshoot network and hardware issues across pre- and post-production environments; open and manage JTAC cases through resolution.
  • Manage hardware lifecycle activities, including RMA requests and tracking through resolution.
  • Provide regular status reports covering network health, project progress, and active issues.
  • Lead customer workshops to review technical issues, provide case updates, and present solutions and workarounds.
  • Deliver knowledge transfer and training to customer teams on configuration, operation, and best practices.
  • Develop and maintain network and equipment operational procedures.
  • Support the production environment for Juniper networking solutions within the customer infrastructure.
  • Define and promote best practices for Juniper product deployment and operations.
  • Collaborate with peer Resident Engineers to share lessons learned and reduce risk during major network changes.
  • Expand technical expertise across the Juniper product portfolio.

Wireless Network Operations & Optimization

  • Provide day-to-day operational support for enterprise wireless environments, including APs, controllers, and cloud-managed platforms (e.g., Juniper Mist).
  • Design, deploy, maintain, and optimize large-scale wireless networks.
  • Perform wireless capacity planning and coverage analysis.
  • Optimize RF performance through channel planning and transmit power adjustments.
  • Monitor and improve network performance, client health, and service levels.

RF Engineering & Interference Analysis

  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for wireless RF technologies.
  • Diagnose and resolve RF issues, including:
    • Co-channel interference (CCI)
    • Adjacent channel interference (ACI)
    • Hidden node conditions
    • Multipath and signal reflection
    • Environmental attenuation
    • Non-Wi-Fi interference (Bluetooth, IoT, microwaves, etc.)
  • Analyze key RF metrics (RSSI, SNR, noise floor, channel utilization, airtime, retry rates).
  • Conduct site surveys, predictive modeling, and post-deployment validation.

Wireless Client Experience & Roaming

  • Troubleshoot and optimize client connectivity, performance, and roaming behavior.
  • Resolve issues such as:
    • Sticky clients
    • Authentication failures
    • DHCP/DNS issues
    • Roaming instability
    • Voice and video performance degradation
  • Configure and support advanced features (802.11k/v/r, band steering, load balancing).

Advanced Troubleshooting & Incident Response

  • Lead investigation and resolution of complex, business-critical incidents.
  • Perform packet capture and analysis using tools (Wireshark, Mist tools, Ekahau, AirMagnet).
  • Correlate wireless issues with wired infrastructure, including VLANs, routing, NAC/802.1X, RADIUS, and firewalls.

Monitoring, Analytics & Automation

  • Utilize Juniper Mist Marvis AI for proactive issue detection and resolution.
  • Analyze Service Level Expectations (SLEs) and client performance metrics.
  • Develop documentation, runbooks, and best practices.
  • Participate in on-call support and major incident response.

Additional Technical Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate Juniper device configurations for deployments and upgrades.
  • Maintain fault diagnosis procedures to improve resolution efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain operational support documentation.
  • Assess network health and performance.
  • Perform testing and validation of network changes and upgrades.
  • Support implementation, integration, and migration activities.
  • Troubleshoot network issues across all layers.
  • Support APIs, automation tools, and AI-driven platforms (Mist, Marvis).
  • Provide ongoing knowledge transfer to customer teams.
  • Act as liaison with JTAC, including case management and escalation.
  • Submit and track problem reports with engineering teams.

Required Background and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in design, implementation, and operations of large-scale IP networks.
  • Strong experience with JUNOS CLI.
  • Deep expertise with QFX and EX platforms (switching and routing).
  • Experience in large enterprise or data center environments, including EVPN/VXLAN.
  • Strong knowledge of core routing protocols (BGP - iBGP/eBGP, and OSPF).
  • Experience with Juniper Mist Wireless Assurance.
  • Familiarity with Juniper technologies such as EVPN, VXLAN, and EZ-LAG.
  • Automation experience using Ansible, YAML, and Juniper PyEZ.
  • Scripting experience in Python.
  • Proven expertise in network design, deployment, and optimization.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to engage executive audiences (CIO/CISO).
  • Ability to translate complex technical requirements into actionable solutions.
  • Experience supporting major network upgrades, maintenance windows, and migrations.
  • Strong customer engagement, presentation, and relationship management skills.
  • Relevant certifications preferred (e.g., JNCIS/JNCIP Mist AI - Wireless).
  • Ability to perform additional duties as required to support customer and business needs.
