Job description

Dusty Strings is seeking a CNC Operator & Drafter. You'll operate the CNC to make our precision wooden parts, manage decades of technical drawings, and participate in general woodworking processes as needed.For over 45 years, Dusty Strings has been designing and building harps and hammered dulcimers in Seattle. We have become highly respected in the world-wide music community for excellent craftspersonship, mesmerizing sound, and caring customer service. Benefits include vacation, sick leave, health & dental insurance, and a positive and collaborative work environment. This job is hiring for 32-40 hours per week.


Core responsibilities:

  • Setup and operate our CNC router machines to produce precision hardwood and plywood parts according to specifications
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, process notes, and machine code files
  • Be the responsible person for CNC machine and tool maintenance
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues and diagnose problems in general shop machinery and related systems; repair or replace worn or malfunctioning parts and equipment
  • Collaborate with team members to optimize production processes and improve efficiency
  • Attend weekly meetings with the Production Manager, Ops Manager, and Team Leads. Leverage our technical drawings to help suss out problems and bring process improvement. Create new technical drawings, production jigs and fixtures, modules, and machine code.
  • Other woodworking tasks as needed


Required Qualifications:

  • Prior experience using CNC routers in a production environment
  • Prior experience with CAD in a production environment
  • Excellent communication, analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail
  • Aptitude for using both computers and physical machines/materials
  • Thrive in a self-directed work environment
  • Regularly maneuver 50-pound modules, materials, and equipment


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Rhino CAD and RhinoCAM
  • Prior 3D drafting experience
  • Prior woodworking experience
  • Proficiency in modifying existing processes and creating new processes in a collaborative environment
  • Prior experience supporting Lean manufacturing processes
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, industrial design, or related
  • In short, a "Maker"
