Job description

An asphalt milling machine operator is responsible for safely operating a cold planer to remove and grind asphalt or concrete surfaces to specified depths and profiles, coordinating with the crew, and performing routine inspections and maintenance to ensure quality and uptime.

Core duties
  • Operate a cold milling machine to remove pavement to required depth, slope, and crossfall, adjusting controls to achieve a consistent, even surface.
  • Monitor grade and speed, use grade control devices, and make real-time adjustments for surface smoothness and tie-ins.
  • Coordinate with dump trucks and ground crew, using radios and hand signals to maintain safe, efficient material flow.
Equipment care
  • Perform daily inspections of milling drum, conveyors, water spray system, and safety devices before operation.
  • Conduct routine maintenance such as greasing, checking fluids, replacing carbide teeth and cutting edges, and minor repairs; escalate major issues to a supervisor or shop.
Safety and compliance
  • Follow company safety programs and traffic control/MOT procedures; wear required PPE and maintain situational awareness around utilities, curbs, pedestrians, and traffic.
  • Protect the public and crew when working near active roadways, schools, transit stops, or rail crossings; report hazards promptly.
Job requirements
  • Proven experience operating an asphalt/cold milling machine; familiarity with grade control systems and milling techniques.
  • Physical capability for extended shifts outdoors, lifting up to roughly 50 lbs, and frequent bending, climbing, and standing.
  • Valid driver's license; ability to work days/nights, overtime, weekends, and travel between job sites as needed.

Typical work environment

Example responsibilities summary
