As of Jul 14, 2026, the average yearly pay for middle office in the United States is $51,476.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $40,000.00 and $59,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a Middle Office and what are its main responsibilities?

The Middle Office is a department within financial institutions that acts as a bridge between the Front Office (which handles client interactions and trading) and the Back Office (which manages settlements and record-keeping). Its main responsibilities include risk management, trade support, financial control, and ensuring compliance with regulations. Middle Office staff help monitor and manage operational risk, validate trades, and provide critical data and analysis to support decision-making. They play a vital role in ensuring that transactions are executed smoothly and in accordance with legal and regulatory standards.

What is the difference between Middle Office vs Back Office?

AspectMiddle OfficeBack Office

Middle Office and Back Office roles are distinct but interconnected. Middle Office focuses on risk management and trade support, while Back Office handles trade settlement and administrative tasks. Both are essential in financial institutions, but they differ in responsibilities, skills, and work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Middle Office professional, and why are they important?

To excel in a Middle Office role, you typically need a strong background in finance or economics, analytical skills, and a relevant degree such as a bachelor's in finance or business. Proficiency in risk management platforms, trade processing systems, and advanced Excel or VBA is often required, with certifications like CFA or FRM being advantageous. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are vital soft skills for ensuring smooth coordination between front and back office teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for managing operational risk, ensuring accurate trade processing, and supporting overall business efficiency in financial institutions.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in a Middle Office role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Middle Office roles often face challenges such as managing tight deadlines, ensuring data accuracy, and bridging communication between Front and Back Office teams. They are responsible for risk management, trade support, and regulatory compliance, which requires keen attention to detail and strong organizational skills. To address these challenges, it's important to develop effective communication strategies, stay updated with evolving regulations, and utilize technology to streamline workflows. Building collaborative relationships across departments also helps to ensure smooth operations and effective issue resolution.

Responsibilities
  • Crypto Settlements: Manage the settlement process for digital assets; this involves direct communication with counterparties to agree on settlement figures and coordinating the settlement of assets
  • Operational Risk Management: Maintain an extreme level of attention to detail to mitigate risks, ensuring zero errors in high-value transactions that directly impact the firm's PnL.
  • Inventory management: Working closely with the traders to ensure inventory is being distributed for maximum efficiency across our trading venues
  • Trade Lifecycle Management: Manage end-to-end middle office operations for equities (single stocks and ETFs), options, futures, and FX. Be able to execute complex reconciliations, settlements, and the management of corporate actions and dividends.
  • New Initiatives & Process Development: Assist in the design, creation, implementation and improvement of robust operational workflows and controls
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Trading, Finance, Compliance, and Legal teams to identify and act on regulatory implications across multiple products
  • Adhoc tasks: Answering trade queries internally and externally

Hard skills requirements
  • BSc in business/finance/quantitative subjects
  • 3+ years of experience in Middle Office/Trade Operations function in a financial services company with high-volume and complex operations (multiple products, multiple geographies, financial regulations); experience in an hft/market making business is a significant advantage
  • Excellent Excel skills
  • Proven experience in process improvement
  • Strong interest in trading and a curiosity about blockchain, crypto, and DeFi

Strong Preference to have:
  • Experience with databases/SQL/reading and writing simple Python scripts would be a significant advantage
  • Deep practical knowledge of traditional financial instruments, including equities, options, futures, and FX
  • Series 99 license
  • Professional crypto experience

Other Requirements
  • Have an owner mentality: take ownership of tasks and projects.
  • A drive to understand the business beyond own role to add value to the overall business.
  • Keen to get involved with the different areas of Middle Office; you should be comfortable working in a very non-hierarchical organization without necessarily having direct reports.
  • Determined, ambitious yet humble, willing to work hard and learn on the way.
  • Like meritocracy and being judged by what you deliver.
  • Have an entrepreneurial mindset; prepared to work non-standard working hours when necessary (since we are a pivotal player in the crypto markets that don't stop 24/7).
  • Like working in the team collaborative environment.

Here is why you should join our dynamic team
  • Opportunity to work at the world's leading algorithmic trading firm in digital assets.
  • Engaging projects offering accelerated responsibilities and ownership growth compared to traditional finance environments.
  • A vibrant working culture with team events, celebrations and company wide team building events.
  • A cool office in the heart of New York City which often hosts some of the leading industry events.
  • Great company culture: informal, non-hierarchical, ambitious, highly professional yet with a startup vibe, collaborative and entrepreneurial.
  • A performance-based compensation with a significant earning upside alongside standard perks like private medical insurance

Note
  • Please ensure you are eligible to work in the US, at the moment Wintermute USA is unfortunately not able to sponsor US visas; if visa is a consideration for you, feel free to apply to the UK or Singapore offices where we offer visas and potential longer term reallocation to the US.
