Metallurgy Process Engineer information

What does a Metallurgy Process Engineer do?

A Metallurgy Process Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and overseeing processes involved in the extraction, refining, and manufacturing of metals and alloys. They work to improve efficiency, quality, and safety in metallurgical operations, such as smelting, casting, and heat treatment. Metallurgy Process Engineers also troubleshoot production issues, ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations, and collaborate with other engineers to develop new materials or processes.

What is the difference between Metallurgy Process Engineer vs Materials Scientist?

AspectMetallurgy Process EngineerMaterials Scientist
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or related fieldBachelor's or Master's in Materials Science, Chemistry, or Physics
Work EnvironmentIndustrial settings, manufacturing plants, metal production facilitiesResearch labs, academic institutions, R&D departments
Industry UsageMetal production, mining, manufacturingResearch, development, academia

Metallurgy Process Engineers focus on optimizing metal production processes in industrial settings, while Materials Scientists primarily conduct research to develop new materials and improve existing ones. Both roles require a strong understanding of material properties but differ in their work environment and application focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Metallurgy Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Metallurgy Process Engineer, a strong background in materials science, metallurgy, and chemical engineering is essential, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with metallurgical analysis tools, process simulation software, and industry certifications like Six Sigma are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help professionals excel in cross-functional teams and complex manufacturing environments. These competencies are crucial for optimizing metal production processes, ensuring product quality, and driving operational efficiency.

What are some typical challenges faced by Metallurgy Process Engineers in optimizing industrial processes?

Metallurgy Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing cost efficiency with maintaining material quality, adapting processes to new alloys or specifications, and troubleshooting unexpected production issues like contamination or equipment wear. They must continuously monitor process parameters, analyze data, and implement improvements while collaborating closely with production teams and quality control. Staying updated with the latest technological advancements and environmental regulations is also crucial to ensure processes remain competitive and compliant.

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As part of a high functioning, cross-functional team , you will be responsible for the materials and processing (M&P) of fluids systems for an advanced upper stage of the New Glenn rocket. This includes review and approval of drawings for both in house and off the shelf components as well as project work such as developing processes and characterizing material properties and allowables. You will be applying your experience in both metallic (e.g. casting, forming, extrusion, plating, corrosion, coating, brazing, anodization, welding, passivation) and non-metallic materials (e.g., O-rings, seals, bushings, lubricants), contributing greatly to our team as we mature this stage into a production vehicle.

Our best team members are flexible in constantly evolving environments, collaborative, detail oriented, and hard working. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight! Passion for our mission and vision is required.

Candidates with higher levels of experience are welcome to apply!

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work with cross-functional team on material selections, manufacturing processes, and suppliers to produce aerospace hardware.
  • Review and approve drawings for conformance to the New Glenn Parts, Materials and Process Plan (ensuring proper selection and definition of materials and processes
  • Own material characterization of physical properties and allowables and help expand the current database of material properties.
  • Support the development of processes culminating in the drawing definition of the process and inspection requirements.
  • As the program progresses to the production phase, M&P support of component non-conformances will be required on an as needed basis.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Chemical, Aerospace Engineering or relevant field from ABET accredited school.
  • 5+ years experience with materials and processes used in the aerospace, other relevant industry.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing and engineering drawing review.
  • Solid interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to learn, grow and tackle new challenges in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent attention to detail and task ownership, someone who demonstrates pride in all work and willingness to perform low-level tasks when needed.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with cross-functional teams across large geographic distances.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with polymer materials - determining properties and relevant testing (large plus for this team)
  • Experience with aircraft, launch vehicle, spacecraft, or satellite development.
  • Experience with materials in extreme environments (i.e., cryogenic temperatures, pure oxygen)
  • Experience with a variety of metallic and nonmetallic material manufacturing technologies
  • Experience with evaluating low cycle and high cycle fatigue performance of materials.
  • Experience working with product lifecycle management (PLM) software, including release and approval processes

Compensation Range for:

CO applicants is $110,938.00 - $155,312.85 WA applicants is $121,023.00 - $169,432.20
