Merchant Account information

What is a merchant account?

A merchant account is a type of bank account that allows businesses to accept and process payments, typically from debit and credit cards. These accounts are essential for businesses that want to offer customers the convenience of paying electronically, whether in-store or online. The merchant account acts as an intermediary between the business, the customer’s bank, and the payment processor, ensuring that funds are securely transferred. Setting up a merchant account usually involves working with a payment processor or acquiring bank, and may require meeting certain underwriting criteria.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a merchant account manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Merchant Account Manager, you need strong knowledge of payment processing, financial products, and account management, often supported by a degree in business or finance. Familiarity with payment gateways, CRM systems, and compliance standards such as PCI DSS is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills help you support merchants and resolve issues effectively. These skills ensure smooth transaction operations, client satisfaction, and long-term business growth in a competitive financial services environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals managing merchant accounts, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals managing merchant accounts often encounter challenges such as payment processing issues, chargebacks, and fraud prevention. Staying informed about payment industry regulations and using robust fraud detection tools can help minimize risks. Effective communication with payment processors and quick resolution of transaction disputes are also essential. Collaborating closely with customer service, IT, and finance teams ensures smooth operations and timely problem-solving.

Our mission is to support small and medium-sized businesses by offering flexible funding options. We're seeking a driven, detail-oriented Funding & Collections Account Manager to join our team and take ownership of daily funding operations, portfolio collections, and legal coordination.

Role Overview
As the Funding & Collections Account Manager, you will be a central part of the operations team—responsible for ensuring smooth and compliant funding, executing soft collections, maintaining merchant account data, and collaborating with legal partners for escalated cases. This position requires a strong understanding of MCA structures, high attention to detail, and effective communication skills.

  • Track and manage ACH activity; identify chargebacks, anomalies, and risk trends
  • Update merchant payment statuses and maintain comprehensive account records
  • Apply appropriate recovery strategies based on MCA paper types (A–D tiers)
⚖️ Legal Coordination
  • Accurately identify and escalate uncollectable files to legal or third-party collection agencies
  • Support the legal process by preparing documents, case notes, and communication logs
  • Understand and navigate state-specific collection laws and litigation protocols

  • Ensure all activity is in compliance with internal standards and relevant regulations (e.g., FDCPA-adjacent practices)
  • Assist in refining internal workflows and policies for collection and funding operations
Team & Merchant Support

  • Identify opportunities for account settlement, renewal, or restructuring
  • Support onboarding and training of new team members in collections and account management processes
  • Provide actionable insights into merchant behavior and delinquency trends

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Legal Studies, or related field
  • 1–3+ years of experience in MCA, financial services, collections, or legal administration
  • Strong knowledge of MCA structures, funding processes, and risk tiers
  • Familiarity with collections best practices and state-specific recovery laws
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and multitasking skills
  • Proficiency with CRM tools, Excel, and payment tracking platforms is a plus
  • Ability to thrive in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
