Medical Legal Partnership Fellow | Boston Childrens Hospital

Hybrid position – Landmark Center, 401 Park Dr. is the office location This is an opportunity for a 2 - 3 year appointment. Position Summary/ Department Summary: The Medical Legal Partnership Fellow is a lawyer within the Office of General Counsel and is supervised by the lawyer responsible for patient care matters. The Fellow will serve as a legal advocate for patients and families who cannot afford an attorney and who are experiencing legal problems that are creating barriers to the delivery of effective healthcare and treatment. The Fellow will receive referrals from members of the General Counsel's office and from hospital clinicians.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing Boston Children's Hospital's Medical-Legal Partnership; which provides access to justice in the areas of housing, family law, education, benefits, and immigration for a 2-3 year appointment.
  • Engaging in strategic outreach with local law firms and local legal services organizations.
  • Coordinating with clinical teams, stakeholders, and outside counsel regarding time-sensitive guardianship matters.
  • Partnering with all members of the patient care team to identify and resolve legal issues which could have negative impact on the patient's health and/or delivery of effective healthcare and treatment to patients and families.
  • Conducting initial assessment of legal matters referred to the Office of General Counsel.
  • Directly identifying matters that can be resolved in a short time frame.
  • Coordinating the hand-off of more substantive and complex matters to legal service providers and law firm partners.
  • Tracking all cases and maintaining databases relating to legal services provided on-site and referred out, and updating databases to track case outcomes.
  • Providing support to the Office of General Counsel regarding patient care matters, including participating in team coverage rotation for off-hour patient care emergency matters after an initial six-month training period.
  • Providing education and training to clinicians in substantive legal topics that impact effective delivery of health care services and treatment.
  • Organizing Medical Legal Partnership Advisory Committee meetings and presentations.
  • Performing other legal duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications Education:

  • Juris Doctorate's Degree required

Experience/Skills:

  • Must have demonstrated affinity and set of experiences in the area of child advocacy.
  • The analytical skills to resolve highly complex problems requiring the application of scientific or technical principles, theories and concepts and in depth, experienced based cross functional knowledge.
  • Advanced interpersonal/communication skills to represent the hospital in legal proceedings
  • The ability to negotiate in extremely important and sensitive situations, persuade members of the Executive Management Group on issues and programs that impact assigned department
  • Will represent the Hospital to external parties, or perform other duties requiring a high level of communication skills

Licensure/ Certifications:

  • Current licensure by the Massachusetts Bar Association as a lawyer is required

Status: Full-Time

Standard Hours per Week: 40

Pay Range: $74089.60-$118549.60 Annual
