Mechatronics Manufacturing Assistance Instructor II

The Mechatronics Manufacturing Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality training in Mechatronics systems as applied to modern manufacturing automation for the RAMI/TRAIN project in Brownsville and the COAST project in Corpus Christi. The Mechatronics Manufacturing Assistance Instructor prepares students for careers in advanced manufacturing automation by providing hands-on Mechatronics training, theoretical knowledge, and industry-relevant skills. This position focuses on teaching students the integration of mechanical, electrical, pneumatics, hydraulics, programmable logic controllers (PLC) and industrial automation systems used to automate manufacturing production equipment. The position prepares students for careers in advanced manufacturing by combining knowledge with hands-on training. The Mechatronics Manufacturing Assistance Instructor will use their knowledge of adult learning theories and learning styles to maximize learner success and ensure overall effectiveness of the course instruction. The Mechatronics Manufacturing Assistance Instructor uses a variety of media to present course materials and is responsible for assisting in curriculum development projects to maintain course relevance and support customer needs. Assists in scheduling training deliveries, coordinates participant registration and logistics, compiles data, and ensures quality control measures are met. This position will be responsible for establishing and maintaining excellent relationships with students, customers and internal support personnel.
This position is located in Brownsville, Texas and reports to the Project Manager - TRAIN Project.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, manufacturing, or applicable field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of hands-on Mechatronics systems experience.
  • One year of experience in adult education and/or training in Mechatronics operation principles.

Equivalency: Will consider an associate's degree with seven years of hands-on Mechatronics systems experience OR a High School Diploma/GED with nine years of hands-on Mechatronics systems experience.
Required Licenses/Certifications:
  • Must have a valid motor vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing or Six Sigma principles.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write Spanish at a proficient level.
  • Experience with robotics, sensors, actuators, and control systems.
  • Industry certifications (e.g. Siemens Mechatronics System Certification, FANUC Robotics Certification).
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM and industrial software tools.
  • Experience with IoT, smart manufacturing and data analytics as related to Industry 4.0 technologies.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to regularly use computer/keyboard.
  • Ability to support training delivery for up to 8-10 hours/day.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions during construction.
  • Physical conditioning consists with movement of training equipment, wearing personal protective equipment during instruction as needed, designing, developing, and deploying curriculum for classroom and online training delivery up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent facilitation, communication, and presentation skills necessary to interact with students, business and community leaders.
  • Proficient use of the principles and methods for instructing and training individuals and groups of various sizes.

  • Ability to present course material using a wide variety of media and technology.
  • Working knowledge of essential office software and instructional programs (Windows and macOS), Office Suites (Microsoft Office, G Suite), presentation software (PowerPoint, Keynote, Zoom).
  • Knowledge of Allen-Bradley and/or Siemens PLC programming.

  • As part of TEEX's mission of providing training, developing practical solutions, and saving lives; this position could be required, if called upon, to deploy within the State of Texas as directed by this position's Division Director/HQ Department Head.
  • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving a personal or TEEX vehicle and/or flying on commercial airlines.
  • This position allows telecommuting per TEEX guidelines.
  • This position is funded from grant and/or contract funding, which is renewed through provisions of the grantor of the contract. Therefore, this position is contingent upon continuation of funding from these grants and/or contracts, as well as satisfactory job performance.
  • This position is located in Brownsville, TX.

Essential Duties, Tasks, and Percentages:
Instructional & Technical Assistance Support - 80%
  • Promotes adaptability, providing instructional and technical assistance support to a broad manufacturing assistance program.
  • Determines course goals and objectives for BCS course developments.
  • Uses a variety of instructional techniques for presenting course material.
  • Develops instructional techniques to accommodate various learning styles.
  • Initiates and maintains interactive classroom discussions.
  • Provides positive reinforcement and motivational incentives.
  • Monitors learner performance.
  • Evaluates and assesses instructional effectiveness.

Coordination & Collaboration - 10%
  • Promotes teamwork by coordinating and collaborating with other personnel assigned to the program, other programs, divisions, and entities to maintain and further develop the program.
  • Assists in the curriculum and technical assistance efforts in support of the RAMI/TRAIN and COAST Project, as well as other deliveries as assigned.
  • Provides status updates to the program director regarding change requests.
  • Works with points of contact from clients and jurisdictions for coordination, development, preparation efforts as needed.
  • Assists in marketing courses

Fiscal & Administrative Duties - 10%
  • Promotes stewardship by performing fiscal and administrative duties in a responsible manner.
  • Ensures completion and collection of student attendance rosters, registration forms, pre-test/post-tests, course evaluations, and delivery records forms.
  • Submits time worked and travel expenses/receipts within the required time frame.

Additional Program/Division responsibilities:
  • Interacts professionally and respectfully with students, staff, and external partners.
  • Follows all dress codes associated with work activity (i.e. Travel, workshop, in office, etc.)
  • Maintains and safeguards assigned divisional equipment and property.
  • Maintains a professional appearance.
  • Maintains an organized workspace.
