To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical design, mathematics, and physics, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), finite element analysis tools, and familiarity with industry standards or relevant certifications (like a Professional Engineer license) are common requirements. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help professionals excel in collaborative and multidisciplinary environments. These skills are crucial for ensuring safe, innovative, and efficient engineering solutions that meet project and client needs.

What are common interdisciplinary collaborations for mechanical engineers in a typical project setting?

Mechanical Engineers often work closely with professionals from other disciplines such as electrical engineers, software developers, and industrial designers, especially when developing complex products or machinery. Collaboration is essential for integrating mechanical systems with electronics and software, ensuring functionality, safety, and efficiency. These interactions usually involve regular team meetings, joint problem-solving sessions, and coordinated testing to achieve project goals. Being comfortable working in cross-functional teams can significantly enhance your success and contribute to innovative solutions.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Designer?

AspectMechanical EngineerMechanical Designer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, PE license (optional)Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Design, CAD certifications (often)
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, testing, project managementCreating detailed CAD models, drafting, and design documentation
Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, aerospace, automotiveProduct design, manufacturing, industrial equipment

Mechanical Engineers focus on designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical systems, often overseeing projects from conception to completion. Mechanical Designers primarily create detailed CAD models and drawings based on specifications. While both roles require technical skills and knowledge of mechanical systems, Mechanical Engineers typically have broader responsibilities including analysis and project management, whereas Mechanical Designers specialize in detailed design work.

What does a mechanical engineer do?

A Mechanical Engineer designs, develops, builds, and tests mechanical devices such as engines, machines, and tools. They use principles of physics and mathematics to solve engineering problems and improve existing products. Mechanical Engineers can work in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and energy. Job description

Job Title: Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

This role offers an experienced Mechanical Engineer the opportunity to lead end-to-end mechanical design for innovative power generation and power distribution equipment, with a strong focus on new product development. You will design from scratch, own the full product lifecycle from concept through manufacturing and support, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and clients, including those in the rapidly growing modular data center and microgrid markets.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed mechanical design using SolidWorks and AutoCAD, including creation of 3D models, 2D drawings, schematics, finite element analyses (FEA), engineering calculations, and testing documentation.
  • Develop clear and accurate assembly drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and design change documentation to support manufacturing and product lifecycle management.
  • Ensure all mechanical designs meet applicable specifications, standards, safety requirements, and the defined project scope for power generation and power distribution equipment.
  • Lead mechanical design efforts on assigned projects, taking ownership of design quality, timelines, and deliverables while coordinating with other engineers and designers.
  • Review, check, and approve mechanical designs and drawing libraries to maintain consistency, accuracy, and compliance with engineering standards.
  • Identify mechanical and technical risks early in the design process, communicate these risks clearly to engineering leadership, and propose mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with operations, manufacturing, production engineering, and other departments to ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability, assembly, and serviceability.
  • Support onsite customer technical needs, including troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and resolution of mechanical issues in the field.
  • Select mechanical components and parts with careful consideration of cost, availability, lifecycle, and potential obsolescence to ensure long-term product supportability.
  • Track design-related costs as projects progress, monitor budget adherence, and report status and variances to engineering and project management teams.
  • Contribute to new product development initiatives in power generation, power distribution, data center, and microgrid applications, helping to expand product lines and support organic growth.
  • Manage a workload of approximately one to two projects at a time, balancing design, documentation, testing, and customer-facing responsibilities.
  • Engage directly with clients in a professional, consultative manner, including participation in commissioning activities and addressing service-related engineering requirements.
  • Travel occasionally, as needed (typically less than 20%), to customer sites such as modular data center installations or other locations requiring onsite engineering support.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 5 years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer in a manufacturing environment.
  • At least 5 years of experience with SolidWorks for 3D modeling and 2D drafting.
  • Hands-on experience with AutoCAD for mechanical design and documentation.
  • Proven expertise in new product development and mechanical design for power generation and power distribution equipment.
  • Experience working with systems related to power distribution, data centers, microgrids, or similar applications.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, including stress analysis, calculations, and application of engineering standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and manage assembly drawings, bills of materials, and design change documentation.
  • Experience coordinating with manufacturing and production engineering to ensure design-for-manufacturing and efficient production.
  • Ability to identify and communicate technical risks and provide practical solutions.
  • Experience supporting client-facing technical activities, including troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage one to two concurrent projects and track design costs.
  • Effective communication skills for cross-functional collaboration and client interaction.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with distribution and power generation equipment in industrial or data center environments.
  • Protective relay applications or related electrical power systems (as they interface with mechanical systems).
  • Experience working on modular data center or microgrid projects.
  • Exposure to full product lifecycle, from initial concept and design through manufacturing, commissioning, and ongoing support.
  • Ability to thrive in a setting where new products are designed from scratch and product lines are actively expanding.
  • Comfort working in both office and shop environments, adapting to the needs of different project phases.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and willingness to engage hands-on in the shop and at customer sites when needed.

Work Environment

This is a Monday through Friday position that combines office-based design work with hands-on involvement in a manufacturing shop environment. You will spend portions of your time in the engineering office focusing on design, modeling, and documentation, and may spend extended periods—such as up to three weeks at a time—in the shop during critical design or build phases. The role involves close collaboration with operations, manufacturing, and production engineering teams, supporting practical, build-focused engineering. You will typically manage one to two projects concurrently, allowing for deep involvement in each project’s full lifecycle. The position is client facing, with occasional travel (generally less than 20%) to customer sites, including locations such as modular data center installations or other facilities where commissioning and service-related engineering support are required. The environment emphasizes innovation in power generation and power distribution, strong collaboration, and the opportunity to contribute directly to the development and growth of new product lines.P
