What does a mechanical engineer project manager do?

A Mechanical Engineer Project Manager oversees engineering projects that involve mechanical systems, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to required specifications. They coordinate between engineering teams, clients, and contractors, manage resources, and resolve technical challenges. Their duties also include project planning, scheduling, budgeting, risk management, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. This role requires both strong technical knowledge and excellent leadership skills to successfully deliver complex projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical engineer project manager?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer Project Manager, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, project management methodologies, and a relevant engineering degree, often supported by PMP certification. Familiarity with CAD software, project scheduling tools like MS Project, and engineering standards is typically required. Strong leadership, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering complex projects on time, within budget, and to client specifications while leading multidisciplinary teams.

How does a mechanical engineer project manager typically balance technical responsibilities with project management tasks?

A Mechanical Engineer Project Manager often needs to strike a balance between hands-on technical problem-solving and overseeing project timelines, budgets, and stakeholder communication. While technical expertise is crucial for understanding design challenges and guiding the engineering team, the role also involves frequent coordination with other departments, managing resources, and ensuring that project milestones are met. Effective time management and delegation are key, as is the ability to translate complex engineering concepts for non-technical stakeholders. This dual focus helps ensure projects are delivered successfully, both in terms of technical quality and overall business objectives.

Job description

Location: Indianapolis, IN

Work Arrangement: Hybrid flexibility available

The Opportunity:

A growing multidisciplinary architecture and engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineering Manager / MEP Leader to take a key leadership role within its expanding building systems practice.

This is a true department leadership opportunity for someone who wants to go beyond technical project delivery and have a meaningful impact on team development, technical direction, client relationships, and the continued growth of an MEP practice.

The group has a strong pipeline of complex projects, with a significant concentration in healthcare, alongside government, institutional, and private-sector work.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a multidisciplinary Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing team
  • Provide high-level Mechanical/HVAC technical leadership
  • Mentor and develop engineers and designers at earlier stages of their careers
  • Oversee project delivery, technical quality, and multidisciplinary coordination
  • Manage client relationships, project schedules, budgets, contracts, and financial performance
  • Partner with senior leadership on the strategic growth of the MEP practice
  • Support client development and business development initiatives
  • Improve technical standards, processes, QA/QC, and overall department performance
  • Remain involved in complex projects while taking broader responsibility for the success of the team

Ideal Background

  • Senior-level Mechanical/HVAC engineering experience within MEP/building systems consulting
  • Previous experience managing an engineering team, department, or practice
  • Strong healthcare project experience
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop engineers
  • Strong project management and client-facing capabilities
  • Experience coordinating across Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing disciplines
  • Understanding of project financials, contracts, and commercial project delivery
  • Comfortable supporting business development and client growth
  • PE strongly preferred

This is an excellent opportunity for an established engineering leader who wants greater ownership and influence over a growing MEP team rather than simply stepping into another senior project delivery position.
