What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical engineer designer?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer Designer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in mathematics, and a relevant engineering degree. Expertise with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and knowledge of industry standards or certifications like FE or PE is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborating with teams and developing innovative solutions. These competencies ensure accurate, efficient, and safe design processes that meet technical and client requirements.

What are the typical collaboration practices for a mechanical engineer designer within a multidisciplinary team?

Mechanical Engineer Designers frequently work alongside electrical engineers, industrial designers, and project managers to develop innovative products or systems. Regular collaboration involves participating in design reviews, sharing CAD models, and integrating feedback to ensure mechanical components align with overall project requirements. Effective communication and openness to interdisciplinary input are essential, as successful designs often depend on harmonizing mechanical solutions with electrical and aesthetic considerations. This team-oriented environment fosters continuous learning and can lead to increased responsibilities or leadership roles as you gain experience.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineer Designer vs Mechanical Drafter?

Job description

Behind every skyline is a community of Engineers.

At Jordan & Skala Engineers (JSE), we design the HVAC systems behind the multifamily and mixed‑use buildings shaping growing cities, skylines, and neighborhoods- everything from mid‑rise and high‑rise mixed‑use towers to garden‑style communities, including podium and garage‑wrap construction. If you like complex buildings, thoughtful coordination, and seeing your work move from model to jobsite, you’ll fit in well here!

We’re looking for a Mechanical Engineer/Designer who can own HVAC design, collaborate in a technology‑driven Revit/BIM environment, and support projects through construction.

What you’ll do

HVAC Systems Design

  • Design HVAC systems including ductwork, piping, and equipment sizing/selection
  • Perform heating and cooling load calculations and apply results to system layouts
  • Design and support DX equipment, VRV/VRF systems, and central plants (chilled water and heating water)
  • Contribute to new construction and renovation/remodel projects

Analysis, Documentation, and Deliverables

  • Perform design calculations, equipment selection, and layout of HVAC equipment
  • Produce clear, coordinated mechanical documentation in a Revit-first BIM workflow (plans, schedules, details, diagrams)
  • Use or support energy/performance documentation such as COMcheck/REScheck
  • Support design-phase deliverables across SD/DD/CD as applicable

Coordination & Construction Support

  • Coordinate mechanical design with plumbing, electrical, architectural, and structural teams in a real‑time Revit/BIM environment
  • Support construction administration including submittal reviews, RFI responses, site visits, and field reports
  • Communicate effectively with Owners, Contractors, Architects, and Code Authorities with a working understanding of cross‑discipline requirements

What will make you successful

Required

  • Experience in HVAC/mechanical building systems design (consulting engineering preferred)
  • Strong working proficiency in Revit (mechanical design within a BIM workflow)
  • Solid understanding of HVAC fundamentals, applicable codes, and constructability considerations
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related engineering discipline)

Preferred

  • Experience with Wrightsoft, Trane TRACE, and/or Carrier HAP
  • Central plant design exposure (gas heat/heating water and chilled water systems)
  • Experience with building energy performance software and compliance documentation (COMcheck/REScheck)
  • Familiarity with green building certification criteria (e.g., LEED)
  • EIT or P.E. license (or clear path toward licensure)

Project types you may support

JSE supports a robust portfolio of project types including hospitality, commercial office, retail/restaurant, industrial, healthcare, and multifamily construction projects.

Why join JSE?
