How much do mechanical jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for mechanical in the United States is $98,854.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $72,000.00 and $119,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What do mechanical engineers do?

Mechanical engineers design, develop, build, and test mechanical and thermal devices, including tools, engines, and machines. They work on a wide range of products, from small parts like micro-sensors to large systems like spacecraft or power plants. Their work often involves problem-solving, using mathematics and physics to create efficient and reliable mechanical systems. Mechanical engineers can be found in industries such as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and energy.

What is the difference between Mechanical vs Electrical?

AspectMechanicalElectrical
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or related fieldAssociate's or Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentFactories, manufacturing plants, design officesPower plants, electrical systems, control rooms
Industry UsageManufacturing, automotive, aerospacePower, electronics, telecommunications

Mechanical and Electrical roles often require similar educational backgrounds but focus on different systems. Mechanical jobs involve designing, maintaining, and repairing mechanical systems like engines and HVAC, while Electrical jobs focus on electrical systems, wiring, and circuitry. Both are essential in manufacturing and industry, but they specialize in different technical areas.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical design, thermodynamics, and problem-solving, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), engineering simulation tools, and possibly a Professional Engineer (PE) license are often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and project management skills help set candidates apart. These skills ensure effective design, analysis, and implementation of mechanical systems in diverse engineering projects.

What are some common challenges mechanical engineers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Mechanical engineers often collaborate with professionals from electrical, software, and civil engineering backgrounds, which can present challenges in communication and aligning project goals. Navigating different technical languages, integrating various system components, and meeting all stakeholders' requirements are frequent hurdles. Successful mechanical engineers proactively foster clear communication, remain adaptable, and seek to understand the perspectives and constraints of other disciplines to ensure smooth project execution.

  • Provide recommendations for system improvements based on performance data and design review.

Project Management & Coordination:
  • Collaborate with construction teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems into overall project plans.
  • Design the mechanical systems, ensuring adherence to design specifications, budget.
  • Review and approve mechanical shop drawings and change orders during construction.

Quality Control:
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and regulations (local, state, and national) related to mechanical systems and installations.
  • Lead the review of the design.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support staff, offering technical guidance and professional development.
  • Lead design reviews and provide technical direction for projects and troubleshooting.

Interactions:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (or related field) from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required.

Experience:
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering with a strong background in the construction industry or related sectors.
  • Proven experience in designing and managing mechanical systems (HVAC, plumbing, fire protection) in commercial, industrial, or residential projects.
  • Hands-on experience with software tools (AutoCAD, Revit, Excel) for mechanical system design and analysis.

Skills & Competencies:
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems design, installation, and commissioning processes.
  • Proficiency in understanding and applying building codes, local regulations, and industry standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
