What are Mat Coordinators?

Mat Coordinators are professionals responsible for overseeing the distribution, placement, and maintenance of mats in various facilities such as gyms, event centers, or industrial sites. Their duties often include ensuring that mats are clean, safe, and properly positioned to prevent accidents and maintain a tidy environment. They may also coordinate deliveries, manage inventory, and work with other staff to support facility operations. Attention to detail and organizational skills are essential for this role.

How does a Mat Coordinator typically collaborate with other departments in a facility?

A Mat Coordinator often interacts closely with departments such as housekeeping, logistics, and facility management to ensure that mat inventory is maintained, cleaned, and distributed efficiently throughout the facility. They may coordinate schedules with cleaning teams, report wear or shortages to procurement, and communicate with safety officers to meet compliance standards. Effective collaboration and clear communication are essential for ensuring that all areas have the necessary supplies and that safety protocols are followed. This team-oriented work environment helps keep operations running smoothly and supports a safe, clean workspace for everyone.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a MAT (Medication-Assisted Treatment) Coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a MAT Coordinator, you need a solid understanding of addiction treatment, case management, and healthcare regulations, often supported by a relevant degree or certification in counseling, social work, or nursing. Familiarity with electronic health records systems, MAT protocols, and compliance documentation is typically required. Strong organizational skills, compassion, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for engaging patients and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. The Registered Nurse (RN) – MAT/MOUD Coordinator will provide direct, high-quality patient care in a correctional setting, with a specific focus on supporting inmates enrolled in the Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) programs. This includes conducting thorough assessments, administering MAT/MOUD medications, implementing individualized care plans, and responding to medical emergencies. The RN will collaborate with healthcare teams—including physicians, counselors, and mental health providers—to develop and monitor comprehensive patient care plans aimed at recovery and rehabilitation. In addition to ensuring compliance with facility policies, state regulations, and infection control standards, the Registered Nurse (RN) – MAT/MOUD Coordinator will play a pivotal role in educating patients about MAT/MOUD medications, supporting their medication adherence, and fostering a recovery-focused environment. This role requires maintaining a safe and efficient healthcare environment while promoting positive patient health outcomes and long-term recovery.

How YOU can Make an Impact:

  • Provide Direct Patient Care: Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans for inmates, particularly those enrolled in the Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) or Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) programs, in accordance with established policies and procedures.

  • Initial and Ongoing Patient Assessments: Conduct comprehensive medical screenings and assessments for all incoming inmates, with a focus on identifying candidates for MAT/MOUD. Provide ongoing healthcare as needed throughout their incarceration, including the management of opioid use disorders.

  • Administer MAT/MOUD and Other Medications: Administer prescribed MAT/MOUD medications, including methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone, and other medical treatments in compliance with physician orders, facility protocols, and healthcare standards.

  • Provide Holistic Care: Manage the care of patients with chronic conditions, acute illnesses, and mental health disorders, coordinating with interdisciplinary healthcare providers to address both physical and behavioral health needs. Ensure that care plans align with the patient’s overall recovery goals, particularly in relation to addiction treatment.

  • Respond to Medical Emergencies: Respond to and manage medical emergencies, including trauma and medical crises, ensuring timely and appropriate interventions. Prioritize care for patients involved in MAT/MOUD programs, ensuring they receive necessary medical attention.

  • Document and Maintain Accurate Records: Accurately document all patient assessments, treatments, progress, and outcomes in the electronic medical record (EMR) in accordance with facility policies and legal requirements. Ensure proper documentation for MAT/MOUD programs, including medication administration and adherence.

  • Compliance and Regulatory Adherence: Maintain compliance with state, federal, and local healthcare regulations, as well as facility-specific policies and procedures related to MAT/MOUD and general patient care.

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Collaborate with healthcare teams, including physicians, mental health professionals, addiction counselors, and correctional officers, to develop and implement comprehensive care plans, particularly for inmates enrolled in MAT/MOUD programs.

  • Patient Education: Provide health education to inmates, including those participating in MAT/MOUD, on the management of their conditions, medication adherence, recovery strategies, disease prevention, and post-care instructions. Promote awareness of opioid addiction and recovery options.

  • Mentorship and Leadership: Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to other nursing staff, providing guidance on clinical practices, protocols, and emergency response procedures. Assist in the supervision and training of LPNs and nursing assistants, ensuring compliance with healthcare standards and best practices.

  • Operational Efficiency: Ensure that medical equipment and supplies, especially those related to MAT/MOUD, are properly stocked, maintained, and functioning. Report any issues to facility management promptly.

  • Infection Control and Safety: Assist in maintaining a clean and safe clinical environment that meets infection control and safety standards, including those specific to the administration of MAT/MOUD medications.

  • Continuous Quality Improvement: Participate in ongoing quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care, clinical outcomes, and the effectiveness of the MAT/MOUD program.

  • Policy and Procedure Development: Contribute to the development and review of healthcare policies and clinical procedures, ensuring that they remain in line with current best practices and regulations, especially regarding MAT/MOUD protocols.

  • Flexible Work Hours: Work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to meet the healthcare needs of the facility, including providing support to MAT/MOUD patients at all times.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What we Ask of YOU:

    • A current, valid state(s) licensure, certificate and/or credentials documenting ability to practice in applicable role (i.e. CMA, LPN, RN, LMHP, etc.).

    • A High School diploma or GED is required.
