POSTION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED
Under limited supervision, the Master Fleet Technician performs advanced mechanical work involving the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and preventative maintenance of the College's fleet vehicles, maintenance equipment, and heavy equipment. This position ensures that campus vehicles and equipment are maintained in safe, reliable operating condition to support college operations. The Master Fleet Technician performs complex mechanical and electrical repairs, assists with preventative maintenance programs, and may provide technical guidance to other maintenance staff. The position also maintains detailed service records and ensures compliance with safety standards and manufacturer specifications.
What You'll Do
  • Performs advanced mechanical repair and maintenance on gasoline, propane, and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment used across campus operations.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, and troubleshoots mechanical and operational issues on fleet vehicles, utility carts, trucks, grounds equipment, and specialized maintenance equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance including oil changes, brake inspections, filter replacement, lubrication, tire maintenance, and system checks.
  • Diagnoses and repairs electrical systems including starters, alternators, batteries, ignition systems, electronic control systems, and onboard diagnostic components.
  • Repairs and maintains hydraulic systems, pumps, cylinders, hoses, and related components used in heavy and grounds equipment.
  • Repairs and replaces engines, transmissions, drive train components, differentials, clutches, and brake systems.
  • Inspects and repairs steering, suspension, axle, and powertrain components.
  • Fabricates or modifies parts and components as needed to maintain equipment functionality; performs basic welding and metal fabrication tasks when necessary.
  • Conducts vehicle and equipment safety inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards and operational guidelines.
  • Maintains detailed service and maintenance records including repair history, inspection reports, and parts usage.
  • Utilizes diagnostic tools, testing equipment, and maintenance software systems to evaluate equipment performance and identify issues.
  • Assists with scheduling and prioritizing repair work to minimize operational downtime.
  • Provides technical assistance or guidance to maintenance staff and student workers when appropriate.
  • Coordinates with Facilities Services staff and campus departments regarding vehicle service needs and equipment availability.
  • Assists with ordering parts, tools, and supplies necessary for fleet maintenance operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What We Are Looking For
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • At least six (6) years of experience performing minor and major equipment repair including but not limited to maintenance of gasoline, propane and/or diesel-powered equipment
  • NC Class B Driver's License
  • NC State Vehicle Safety & OBDII Emissions Inspector License; or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • 609 Certification; or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire

OR any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Automotive Technology or related field
  • ASE Certified Master Status in Automobile & Light Truck or Medium-Heavy Truck
  • Forklift Certification

Additional Information
Work Environment: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in a fleet maintenance shop and across campus facilities. Possible exposure to mechanical equipment, moving parts, fuel vapors, oils, solvents, cleaning agents, and varying weather conditions. Noise levels in the work environment may range from moderate to high due to operating equipment and machinery. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used in accordance with college safety policies and OSHA standards.
Physical Demands:
  • Standing, walking, and bending for extended periods
  • Lifting, carrying, or moving equipment and parts up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier items with assistance
  • Working in confined spaces or underneath vehicles
  • Using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment
  • Climbing ladders or equipment as necessary
  • Reaching, pushing, pulling, and manual dexterity to perform mechanical repairs
  • Visual acuity to inspect equipment and read technical manuals

Normal Working Hours: Standard schedule, Monday - Friday; Occasional early morning, evening, weekend, or holiday work may be required to support campus operations, respond to equipment issues, perform emergency repairs, or complete maintenance activities during periods that minimize disruption to college operations. May also be required to respond to urgent or unscheduled maintenance needs affecting campus vehicles or equipment.
