Job description

MAJOR FUNCTIONS Under the general guidance and leadership of the Director of Logistics. This is entry-level work in traffic signs and markings. Position requires a working knowledge of traffic markings, their products and purposes; production, installation and maintenance of signs; and the installation of signs/markings for traffic control and information.

This position will be intricately involved in the building, marking and installation of signs throughout the City. Understanding and compliance with safety protocols are critical in this role. This is an emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair, and recover the City before, during, and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, tropical storm, winter storm, ice storm, etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Assist in fabrication of street name and traffic signs, custom signage and vehicle lettering and graphics Assist in training and sharing skills with new signs and markings specialists.

Constructing, removing, installing and maintaining traffic signs on City streets Installs and maintains other signs or decals as required by the City. Removing and installing decals and vehicle markings. Removing, cutting limbs, shrubs and vegetation blocking the view of street signs.

Cleaning dirt, mold, growth and graffiti from signage. Works from written work orders, oral instructions, drawings, layouts, sketches and specifications. Maintains notes and a high level of organization to track tasks outstanding and those completed.

Investigates and resolves complaints and endeavors to maintain good public relations. Remove/install temporary traffic control devices such as cones, barricades, delineators, message boards and signs for special events and emergency situations. Maintain, remove and install pavement markings on city roads and parking lots using thermoplastic, paint or other supplies, such as stop bars, crosswalks, parking lots/lines, curbs, bicycle paths, speed humps and other related markings.

Assists in setting up traffic control in the work zone area, including Maintenance of Traffic (MOT). Cutting wood, PVC, post and other sign substrates. Complies with all City and Departmental safety policies, programs, rules, guidelines and procedures in the performance of work, including as it relates to vehicles, equipment, tools and facilities.

Cleans and maintains assigned work vehicles, tools and equipment. Maintains a neat, orderly and safe work environment. Operates vehicles, trailers, high BTU torches, forklift, shop equipment and various hand and power tools to complete daily tasks.

Attends meetings, workshops and training as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills. Use typical measurement devices, including tape measures, rulers and other measurement tools, to verify compliance with Federal, State and Local laws and regulations. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of methods, practices and techniques used in the work assigned. Knowledge of the material, tools and equipment used in the work assigned. Ability to work under adverse conditions, including heat, cold and inclement weather, Ability to perform manual type labor including digging, heavy lifting, mowing, weed eating and trimming.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in the work assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective, positive, cooperative and team-focused working relationships with team members, leadership, other departments and the general public. Ability to push/pull paint machines, asphalt grinders and other equipment.

Ability to traverse expediently and alertly on roadways in and around traffic. Knowledge or ability to determine and ensure correct placements of traffic signs and markings. Strong ability to perform at a high level of accuracy with exemplary attention to detail.

Knowledge of basic arithmetic for measurements of traffic signs, markings, decals and cutting posts to the required height. Ability to work both indoors and outdoors, including on streets and rights of way. Ability to work at heights and on ladders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Valid Driver's License. Possess MOT (Maintenance of Traffic)certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months.

A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the team member to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position is characterized by moderately heavy physical exertion, including some climbing of ladders, operating out of a small boat and bucket truck at various heights, walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing or raising objects.
