What is a marketing startup?

A Marketing Startup job involves developing and executing marketing strategies for a new or emerging company. This role typically includes market research, branding, digital marketing, content creation, and growth hacking to attract customers and drive business expansion. It requires creativity, adaptability, and a data-driven approach to maximize limited resources. Since startups operate in a fast-paced environment, marketers must be willing to experiment and pivot strategies quickly. Effective communication and collaboration with other teams are also crucial for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a marketing startup?

To thrive at a marketing startup, you need a strong grasp of digital marketing strategies, data analysis, and growth-oriented campaign development, often supported by a degree in marketing or related experience. Familiarity with platforms like Google Analytics, social media advertising tools, and CRM systems is common and can be enhanced by certifications such as Google Ads or HubSpot. Resilience, creativity, and adaptability are crucial soft skills, as is the ability to communicate ideas clearly within small, dynamic teams. These skills are essential for rapidly testing new ideas, efficiently scaling campaigns, and contributing to the startup’s fast-paced growth.

What are some common challenges faced by marketing professionals in a startup environment?

Marketing professionals in startups often encounter challenges such as balancing multiple roles, working with limited resources, and needing to quickly pivot strategies based on evolving business goals. The pace can be fast and priorities may shift rapidly, requiring a high degree of flexibility and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Collaborating closely with product, sales, and leadership teams is typical, so strong communication and teamwork skills are essential. These challenges, however, offer valuable opportunities for rapid skill development and greater ownership over projects compared to larger organizations. If you enjoy creative problem-solving and thrive in dynamic settings, a marketing startup role can be both demanding and highly rewarding.

We work to communicate the value of our financial solutions, attract new customers, and strengthen relationships with existing ones. By leveraging data-driven insights and creative strategies, we ensure Airwallex stands out in a competitive market. Our team is passionate about telling the Airwallex story and supporting the company's growth and success.
What you'll do
We're looking for a Senior Manager of Influencer Marketing to build and lead our global influencer strategy from the ground up. This is a high-impact role responsible for driving virality around major brand and product moments, architecting our creator strategy, and building the systems and partnerships needed to operate at scale across key markets (US, UK/EU, AU, SG, HK).
You'll combine strategic insight, cultural instinct, operational excellence, and influencer-world fluency to make Airwallex the most talked-about fintech brand globally.
The role is based in San Francisco.
Responsibilities:
  • Define and own Airwallex's global influencer and creator roadmap across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, podcasts, newsletters, and emerging platforms. Shape strategies for major launches, campaigns, and cultural moments to drive brand awareness, engagement, and virality, while enabling local teams to execute market-specific adaptations.
  • Architect multi-layered creator campaigns that amplify major announcements, fundraises, product launches, partnerships, and company milestones. Identify and engage high-impact creators across business, fintech, tech, lifestyle, and culture who can authentically champion the brand.
  • Design and oversee systems, workflows, and tooling for creator sourcing, outreach, contracting, approvals, tracking, and reporting. Develop playbooks and templates for regional teams and maintain a robust global creator database.
  • Lead end-to-end relationship management with top-tier influencers and agents. Set expectations for performance, negotiate contracts, and ensure consistent brand safety, messaging alignment, and creative excellence.
  • Define success metrics across awareness, reach, engagement, and content performance. Oversee dashboards and reporting frameworks, test formats and creators, and implement insights to continuously optimize campaigns.
  • Partner with Brand, Product Marketing, Comms/PR, Social, Regional Marketing, and Executive Leadership to integrate influencer initiatives into broader brand and product strategies. Collaborate with Legal, Finance, and Procurement to streamline global creator operations

Who you are
We're looking for people who meet the minimum qualifications for this role. The preferred qualifications are great to have, but are not mandatory.
Minimum qualifications:
  • 8+ years in influencer marketing, creator partnerships, digital marketing, or brand marketing (startup or high-growth tech preferred).
  • Proven track record driving large-scale influencer campaigns that create real cultural impact and measurable growth.
  • Deep understanding of the influencer ecosystem, platform dynamics, and what drives virality.
  • Experience managing global markets or multi-country campaigns.
  • Strong negotiation, relationship-building, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Operational excellence - you can design systems, processes, and frameworks that scale globally.
  • Ability to move fast, thrive in ambiguity, and execute with precision under tight timelines.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience in fintech, payments, B2B SaaS.
  • Relationships with top-tier creators, agents, and podcast networks.
  • Experience building a global influencer program from scratch.
  • Ability to analyze performance data and turn insights into action.
