What is a marketing designer?

A marketing designer is a graphic design specialist. In this career, you use skills in the arts to develop advertising and marketing campaigns for clients. Today, this job usually requires the use of computer programs. To accomplish your design duties, you need skills in both manual drawing and computer-aided illustration or graphics creation. You may work with an in-house marketing department or for an advertising agency.

What is a marketing designer?

A Marketing Designer is a creative professional responsible for designing visual materials that support a company's marketing efforts. This includes creating graphics for advertisements, social media, email campaigns, websites, and print materials. Marketing Designers work closely with marketing teams to ensure that all visuals align with brand guidelines and effectively communicate the intended message to the target audience. Their role bridges the gap between design and marketing, helping to drive engagement and achieve business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a marketing designer?

To thrive as a Marketing Designer, you need a solid understanding of graphic design principles, branding, and marketing concepts, typically backed by a degree in design or a related field. Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and experience with digital marketing tools are commonly required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong collaboration skills help set top candidates apart. These abilities ensure that marketing materials are visually compelling, on-brand, and effective in achieving business goals.

How does a marketing designer typically collaborate with other teams to deliver successful campaigns?

Marketing Designers frequently work closely with marketing managers, copywriters, and digital strategists to create cohesive visual assets that align with broader campaign goals. They attend strategy meetings to understand target audiences and key messages, then translate these insights into compelling graphics, digital ads, and social media visuals. Effective collaboration requires open communication and adaptability, as feedback and revisions are a routine part of the process. This teamwork ensures that all creative assets are on-brand, optimized for various channels, and meet project deadlines.

Overseeing brand identity, marketing campaigns, media relations, digital strategy, and cross-departmental storytelling, the Manager develops the annual marketing plan, sets the narrative direction, and ensures consistent, compelling communication across all platforms. The position works closely with Advancement, Artistic, and Production teams to grow audiences, deepen engagement, and strengthen relationships.
This role also supervises the Brand & Digital Marketing Designer, providing creative direction, mentorship, and clear alignment with brand standards and strategic priorities.
All employees are expected to embody The Cabaret's values: We Deliver the WOW, We Practice Radical Hospitality, We Welcome Everyone, We Lift Each Other Up, and We Do the Right Thing.

A flexible schedule is essential, including the ability to work evenings and weekends during performances and events. The Cabaret presents 40-50 performance nights annually in its award-winning theatre, with show weekends typically occurring twice per month.

  • Build and strengthen brand partnerships across the city, region, and national arts landscape to amplify visibility and institutional influence.
  • Oversee development of an institutional storytelling framework that integrates artistic programming, student impact stories, and donor/community partnerships into a cohesive narrative system.

  • Craft narrative frameworks that unify communications across marketing, development, education, and programming.
  • Serve as the organization's lead writer and editor for external communications, ensuring clarity, warmth, inclusivity, and alignment with mission and values.
  • Provide counsel and strategic direction to internal teams to ensure consistency and accuracy across platforms.
  • Drive forward-looking storytelling that elevates The Cabaret's national profile and showcases its artistic vision and commitment to world-class artistry and Radical Hospitality.

Marketing Strategy & Campaign Leadership
  • Create and execute the annual marketing and communications plan, including promotional calendars, audience-development strategies, and campaign goals.
  • Develop marketing strategies to support revenue goals-including ticket sales, fundraising initiatives, and institutional visibility.
  • Develop annual storytelling assets (impact videos, artist features, season trailers, donor stories, slide decks, digital reports) that support programming, development, and institutional messaging.
  • Collaborate with the Audience & Donor Experience Manager on integrated patron/donor communications and audience journey mapping.
  • Oversee strategy and content for print materials, including season programs, brochures, donor/sponsor recognition, and promotional assets.
