Job description

Title:   LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST - ELEMENTARY

Position Type: Exempt

Primary Function:

Provides for the delivery of library services in the school setting.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and a Virginia teaching license with a library science endorsement.
  • Exemplary teaching experience preferred.
  • Experience in technology use and developing technology-based solutions in educational settings preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with all students, parents, school personnel, and other members of the community.
  • Strong organizational and management skills
  • Ability to prepare and disseminate written reports within required timelines.
  • Ability to monitor and ensure appropriate student behavior.
  • Ability to implement appropriate instructional technology to support content curriculum, the YCSD Strategic Plan, and the VDOE Profile of a Virginia Graduate
  • Ability to stay abreast of and analyze advancements and trends in educational technology and make recommendations for changes and improvements to systems and/or programs that support instruction.
  • Considerable knowledge of internet safety, information literacy, copyright & fair use, and COPPA & FERPA guidelines.
  • Considerable knowledge of effective technology use for instruction.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Manages the library budget and maintains accurate financial records.
  • Orders, processes, maintains, and circulates print and non-print library materials; solicits input from faculty and students concerning the selection of new materials.
  • Analyzes, selects, and integrates texts, materials, and library resources that reflect cultural inclusivity and the needs of all students.
  • Makes available lists, reviews, and catalogs for teachers to use in selecting and requesting materials which support their curriculum.
  • Promotes reading in innovative ways such as digital media and schoolwide programming.
  • Develop initiatives to encourage and engage learners in reading, writing, and listening for understanding and enjoyment.
  • Plans and prepares for daily instruction that addresses national library standards, digital learning integration standards, and relevant curriculum standards.
  • Plans collaboratively with classroom teachers so that library skills and digital learning skills are taught in conjunction with curriculum related activities.
  • Curates materials on specific subjects for student and teacher use; publishes lists of new materials added to the library collection.
  • Researches, investigates, and uses instructional devices and applications to support teaching and learning.
  • Works collaboratively to develop and conduct appropriate professional development sessions related to the use of media center materials, information literacy, instructional technology, digital learning integration, and STEM resources.
  • Maintains an inviting and pleasant environment that encourages maximum use of the library by both students and faculty.
  • Conducts an inventory of library materials and catalogued school equipment.
  • Maintains accurate, complete records and reports as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
  • Sets measurable goals for the library program based on data; documents and communicates progress through the year.
  • Manages the duties of library volunteers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Terms of Employment:

Teaching contract plus 3 days. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations regarding the evaluation of licensed personnel.
