Job description

Are you a licensed engineer who is inspired by energyefficiency in commercial buildings? If yes, see what Wake County General Services Administration (GSA) has to offer. We are looking for our next Senior Energy Engineer to provide professional guidance andleadership in energy management as well as improving and maintaining a varietyof facilities. This position includes analyzingand presenting data and making repairs and improvements in energy efficiency inthe building portfolio and serving as Project Manager for energy projects. Here at GSA our portfolio includes nearly 200 buildings,totaling over 5 million square feet and vary greatly from cutting-edge new constructionto one of the oldest and most unique high-rises in NC. Our facility inventory includes courthouses, EMSstations, libraries, health centers, detention centers and the list keepsgoing. Every day brings something new and we keep you inside the county, onlytraveling from Apex to Zebulon.

Essential Functions:
This position is responsible for specializing in Mechanical & Electricalprojects such as HVAC controls, LED Lighting, retro commissioning and solar PV andEV charging projects. This position assist in energy analysis and long-term planning for the entire buildingportfolio to reduce utility and operating costs and make progress on Countystrategic goals and resolutions. PhysicalPlant has 4 work groups: General Trades, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing.The Supervisors for these trades will often rely on this position for guidancein problem solving, modernizing systems, or coordinating resources among each tradediscipline especially related to optimizing facility energy use. Essentially, this position's expertise will be solicited and valued on energy related items.


The Senior Energy Engineer will alsohave responsibility for energy management of Wake County facilities and isstaff to the Wake County Energy Advisory Commission along with the PhysicalPlant Director. This position also works closely with Facilities Design &Construction to ensure that buildings are built in a sustainable andmaintainable manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facility Management: Keeps Wake County facilities, its buildingsystems and related equipment operating as consistently and efficiently aspossible-this includes assisting Trades Supervisors with troubleshootingsystem failures and ensuring that buildings are code compliant and meet allregulatory requirements
  • Project Management: Function as or work collaboratively withProject Managers on establishing the scope, budget, design, schedule andimplementation of the project
  • Data Analysis: Analyze a range of data inputs including utility data and buildingsystem information to identify meaningful trends that will assist indecision-making processes and interpret diagnostics on system operations inorder to maintain the integrity of core building systems
  • Presentations: Ability to craft and deliver detailed presentations onenergy concepts for a broad range of audiences
  • Leadership: Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems andgeneral construction principals and processes is required to offer guidance to allrelated Trades groups      
  • Planning: Assists in the planning of CIP projects in theEnergy Conservation Measure CIP- this position will work with the trade groupsto ensure that technology implemented and considered has a defined maintenanceplan
