Job description

Jupiter Power is an energy infrastructure company focused on the development, construction, trading and operation of battery energy storage assets across U.S. power markets. Formed in 2017, the company is a national leader in energy storage deployment, utilizing its proprietary optimization applications daily to dispatch its fleet and support its offtake customers. Backed by BlackRock's Diversified Infrastructure business, Jupiter Power has a strategic portfolio of nearly 2,300 MW / 5,000 MWh in operations or under construction and a pipeline of over 12,000 MW in new projects in development.
To support its expanding portfolio, Jupiter Power is seeking a Real Time Trader who will be responsible for daily real-time trading and QSE operations of its battery energy storage systems (BESS) in power markets, with an initial concentration in ERCOT.
Regular duties include (i) asset optimization and dispatch in the Real Time market for Energy and Ancillary Services, (ii) supporting the DA traders with views of market fundamentals used to assist in the daily decision making of how to allocate the BESS capacity between the Day-Ahead Energy, Real-Time Energy and Ancillary Service Markets, (iii) follow QSE operating procedures and protocols while coordinating with operations to ensure reliable, compliant and efficient market operations.
This role will be based out of our Houston, TX office and is subject to our Company's return-to-office policy which currently requires a minimum of three days a week in the office.
Key Responsibilities
  • Continuously manage the operating assets in Real Time by executing trading and scheduling decisions to ensure capacity (state of charge) availability to meet energy and ancillary service obligations while operating within ISO protocols, NERC standards and Jupiter Power risk policy.
  • Evaluate proprietary AI pricing forecasts and dispatch schedules to assist in making real time operating decisions.
  • Work with Jupiter SCADA team and Remote-Operations Control Center (ROC) to identify and troubleshoot real-time communication issues between the site equipment, internal data management systems, and scheduling software.
  • Communicate with ROC staff in Real Time regarding asset availability and inputting outages/communicating with Scheduling Entities and ISOs where applicable
  • Work within a 24/7 rotating real-time operations schedule that will include working nights, weekends, and holidays in the office. This includes covering off cycle shifts if needed and deployments for weather events
  • Use 3rd party modules and ISO published reports to monitor Real Time system conditions, outages, and constraints to enhance dispatch decisions.
  • Supporting asset onboarding and ongoing support for asset planning & reporting including acting as liaison with clients/business partners, maintenance of asset parameter data, outage planning and asset monitoring
  • Support the Business Development, Data Science and Software teams in delivering their accountabilities where required.

Requirements
  • Two or more years in a Real Time Power role such as control room operations, power trading, generation scheduling, or asset management
  • Working knowledge in one or more ISOs preferred (ERCOT, CAISO, WECC, SPP, MISO, PJM, IESO, NYISO, ISONE)
  • NERC certification and familiarity with energy storage technologies are advantages
  • A degree(s) in finance, economics, math, electrical theory, electrical power distribution, electrical power generation, or relevant field
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in a high stress environment while managing time in sometimes rapidly changing situations
  • Demonstrates high standards in risk management, performance management, relationships with relevant 3rd parties and clients, communication, analysis, decision making, and legal & regulatory compliance
  • High comfort level with fast-moving organizations, with the curiosity and enthusiasm to innovate and formulate new ideas and to bring the best out of co-workers.
