Geis Construction - Onsite Safety Coordinator

Commercial & Industrial Construction | Cleveland, Ohio

Location: Cleveland, OH

Department: Safety

Reports To: Safety Director

Employment Type: Full-time, Exempt

Travel: Initial Position at (1) project in Cleveland. With advancement, daily travel between active jobsites.

Position Summary -

Geis Construction is Cleveland-based commercial and industrial construction company seeking a hands-on Safety Coordinator to support our growing portfolio of projects across Northeast Ohio.

In this role, you will serve as the on-the-ground safety presence at active jobsites, partnering with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, and field crews to ensure that every team member goes home safe at the end of each day.

The Safety Coordinator is responsible for implementing and enforcing the company's safety program, conducting jobsite inspections, delivering training, and helping drive a culture in which safety is treated as a core value rather than a compliance task. This is an ideal opportunity for a mid-career safety professional who enjoys spending most of their time in the field and wants to make a visible impact on a well-established local builder.

Key Responsibilities:

Jobsite Safety & Compliance

•      Conduct daily and weekly safety inspections at active commercial and industrial jobsites throughout the Cleveland metro area.

•      Verify compliance with OSHA construction standards

•      Identify hazards, recommend corrective actions, and follow up to confirm timely resolution.

•      Review subcontractor site-specific safety plans, JHAs/JSAs, and pre-task plans before mobilization.

•      Monitor high-risk activities including steel erection, crane and rigging operations, excavation, scaffolding, fall protection, hot work, confined space entry, and electrical work.

 Training & Communication

•      Lead new-hire orientations, toolbox talks, and weekly safety stand-downs at the jobsite level.

•      Deliver targeted training on topics such as fall protection, silica exposure, lockout/tagout, PPE, ladder safety, and equipment operation.

•      Coach foremen and superintendents on how to run effective pre-task planning and daily huddles.

•      Build positive working relationships with field crews and subcontractors; serve as an approachable resource for safety questions and near-miss reporting.

•      Partner with HR and the Safety Director on workers' compensation claims and return-to-work programs in coordination with the Ohio BWC.

•      Track and trend incident, inspection, and observation data; report results to project leadership and ownership.

Program Administration

•      Maintain accurate safety records including training rosters, certifications, inspection logs, etc

•      Assist with updates to the company's written safety program, site-specific safety plans, and emergency action plans.

•      Help administer the company's drug and alcohol testing program in accordance with policy and applicable law.

Required Qualifications

•      5 to 10 years of safety experience in commercial, industrial, or heavy construction.

•      Working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 (Construction) and 1910 (General Industry) standards.

•      OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification (current).

•      Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification (or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire).

•      Valid Ohio driver's license

•      Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and site logistics plans.

•      Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable addressing crews, subcontractors, and project leadership.

•      Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and willingness to learn construction safety software such as HammerTech.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

•      Work is performed primarily on active construction jobsites; exposure to weather, noise, dust, and uneven terrain is expected.

•      Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding, navigate stairs, and access elevated work areas and excavations.

•      Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods.

•      Required to wear and properly use PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, hi-visibility apparel, gloves, hearing protection, and safety-toed boots.

•      Schedule generally aligns with field hours; occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekends may be required to support active operations or respond to incidents.
