Job description

Job Description
General Motors is undergoing a major transformation, both in how we operate and in how we will influence the future of transportation. Our Software Services team is on the forefront of this work, emboldening our culture by seeking out determined, innovative individuals who will join our team to help move us forward and achieve our mission.
The General Motors Global IT Organization is seeking to identify highly motivated and qualified individuals for potential future opportunities as a Staff Systems Configurator - SAP Functional Analyst (Level 8 individual contributor) to design, configure, and support SAP solutions that enable our end-to-end value chain across:
  • Source-to-Deliver / Source-to-Pay (Supply Chain & Direct Material Sourcing and Procurement for Automotive)

  • Make-to-Ship (Manufacturing & Plant Operations)

  • Order-to-Delivery (Order Management & Distribution)

This requisition is intentionally broad across SAP specialties, including but not limited to SD, FI-CO, MM, PP, WM, EWM, Ariba Direct Material Sourcing and Procurement for Automotive, and S/4HANA. You do not need experience in all of the areas listed; we are seeking strong SAP talent across one or more of these modules and encourage candidates to apply even if their expertise is focused in specific domains.
This role is scoped as a Level 8 expert individual contributor in the Systems Configurator job family, leading complex, multi-team SAP initiatives and setting functional direction in partnership with Senior (Level 7) Systems Configurators.
Location: Warren, MI or Austin, TX
The Role
As an SAP Functional Analyst, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams in Product Lifecycle Management, Global Purchasing & Supply Chain (GPSC), Manufacturing, Logistics, and Order Management to gather requirements and to design, configure, and support SAP solutions that meet business needs across the Source-to-Deliver, Make-to-Ship, and Order-to-Delivery spaces.
You will implement scalable SAP processes, ensure solutions align with industry best practices and GM's IT Solution Delivery Methodology, optimize business operations, support and extend SAP modules, drive process improvements through automation and standardization, and help design and build new SAP-based landscapes that transform how work is done today. At the staff level, you will also own the functional roadmap for your domains, lead design decisions that span multiple product teams, and act as the primary advisor to leaders on SAP capability and process strategy.
You will:
  • Translate business needs into robust, integrated SAP configurations and functional designs.

  • Optimize business operations in areas such as Order Management, Pricing, Billing, Supply Chain, Logistics, Direct Material Sourcing & Procurement, Purchasing, Production Planning & Execution, Warehousing, and Master Data.

  • Support GM's journey to S/4HANA and SaaS-first solutions, helping rationalize and modernize the SAP and surrounding application landscape.

  • Define and champion SAP configuration standards, patterns, and guardrails for Senior (Level 7) and mid-level Systems Configurators across your functional domains.

  • Provide final functional sign-off for high-risk or high-impact changes, balancing stability, scalability, and speed of delivery.

What You'll Do
  • Lead SAP configuration and solution design for core business processes such as Order to Cash, Procure to Pay, Production Planning & Execution, and related workflows. This includes ownership of complex, cross-functional initiatives that span multiple SAP products, regions, or business units.

  • Oversee financial postings, cost allocations, and supplier collaboration as they relate to your SAP functional domains.

  • Support sourcing, procurement, supplier management, production planning, logistics, inventory control, warehouse management, and goods movement processes.

  • Collaborate with business stakeholders, analysts, and technical teams to gather requirements and deliver SAP solutions that are scalable, secure, and aligned with GM standards. Influence prioritization and trade-offs across teams to ensure solutions advance key GM objectives, not just local optimizations.

  • Participate in testing, validation, and deployment of SAP enhancements and new functionalities; ensure strong end-to-end process validation. Drive the overall test strategy for your domains and ensure appropriate use of automation and regression testing.

  • Support integration of SAP with external systems, partnering with integration and infrastructure teams.

  • Help evaluate and rationalize the existing manufacturing, supply chain, and order management application landscape, determining which solutions are integrated with, absorbed into, or retired in favor of SAP S/4HANA and related SAP SaaS solutions.

  • Participate in SAP upgrades, migrations, and digital transformation initiatives, including S/4HANA and cloud/SaaS adoption. Serve as a key decision-maker on fit-to-standard vs. extension, aligned with GM's clean core strategy.

  • Apply standard SAP functionality to meet business needs, minimizing custom development while still addressing critical gaps via RICEFW objects.

  • Contribute to application management and production support, including issue triage, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement in your functional areas. Act as the top functional escalation point for complex incidents and systemic issues.

  • Create and maintain process documentation, configuration guides, and training materials to support adoption and reuse.

  • Mentor junior team members and promote best practices in SAP solution delivery, testing, and operations. Systematically coach Senior Systems Configurators and other team members, building depth and succession in critical SAP domains.

  • Adhere to organizational IT standards, security protocols, and industry best practices, including relevant regulatory and internal control requirements. Proactively identify control gaps and drive remediation in partnership with Risk, Compliance, and Audit teams.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Business Computing, Information Systems, Supply Chain) or equivalent experience.

  • Extensive hands-on SAP experience, including configuration of one or more relevant modules, for example:

  • SD Order Management, Pricing, Billing, Order-to-Cash.

  • FI-CO integration with Supply Chain, Manufacturing, or Order Management.

  • MM, WM, EWM procurement, inventory, warehouse, and logistics execution.

  • PP / Manufacturing production planning and execution, plan-to-produce.

  • DMe/DMC SAP Digital Manufacturing or other digital manufacturing solutions, and integration with plant-floor and logistics systems.

  • Ariba Direct Material Sourcing and Procurement for Automotive.

  • S/4HANA functional configuration and extensibility.

  • Proven track record leading end-to-end SAP solution delivery for complex programs (e.g., multi-release roadmaps, large deployments, S/4 migrations, or significant new capability introductions).

  • Strong understanding of SAP principles and extensibility approaches, including how to design upgrade-safe, cloud-compliant solutions.

  • Solid business process knowledge in areas such as Order Management, Pricing, Billing, Supply Chain, Logistics, Direct Material Sourcing & Procurement, Purchasing, Production Planning, Warehousing, and Master Data.

  • Experience supporting integration with other SAP modules and external systems, including familiarity with common interface technologies (e.g., IDocs, APIs, middleware).

  • Familiarity with software testing, automation, and quality assurance practices; ability to define and execute test plans and support automated/regression testing.

  • Ability to debug and analyze SAP systems, preferably with some ABAP knowledge to support issue analysis and collaboration with development teams.

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, with a structured approach to diagnosing issues and proposing options.

  • Strong commitment to continuous improvement, teamwork, and integrity, including willingness to learn new SAP and cloud capabilities.

  • Ability to set direction for a functional area, influence architecture and product roadmaps, and make sound trade-off decisions.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • SAP certification in one or more relevant modules (e.g., SD, MM, PP, WM/EWM, FI-CO, Ariba, S/4HANA).

  • Experience with SAP Automotive Suite or similar industry-specific solutions supporting OEMs, suppliers, or complex manufacturing.

  • Familiarity with the SAP Integrated Tool Chain - including Signavio (process modeling), SAP Cloud ALM (CALM), and Tricentis (Tosca) - as well as SAP Fiori and SAP BTP, especially for cloud-based SAP extensions and integrations.

  • Exposure to SAP AI / analytics capabilities and apply analytics/AI in manufacturing, supply chain, or order management use cases.

  • Experience with EDI transaction sets (ANSI X12, EDIFACT) and related communication protocols, and/or other integration platforms (e.g., SAP PI/PO, SAP Integration Suite, Sterling, Connect Direct).

  • Background working with manufacturers, suppliers, or service providers, ideally in automotive or complex discrete manufacturing environments.

  • Prior consulting experience or working with global stakeholder groups, including experience in regulated environments (e.g., SOX, internal controls, legal/tax requirements).

  • Demonstrated ability to represent your functional area in senior-level forums (e.g., steering committees, enterprise design councils) and to influence outcomes across organizations without direct authority.
