Job description

JOB SUMMARY: Entry level position. Under closesupervision learns basic setup and operations of a major machine tool in the assigned cell.Learns to machinesurfaces of various types of metals to specifications and close tolerances. Uses precision measuringinstruments. Learns to select tools, dies, cams, wheels, spacers etc. for proper set-up, and makeminor repairs to machines. While in this position employee will be expected tooperate other cell machines or perform other cell duties while not activelytraining.

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Include thefollowing. Other duties may be assigned as necessitated by Company production requirements.
    Under thesupervision of the Supervisor and direction of Leadperson performs the following:
    Learns to set-up and operate a major machine tool used in the cell. Learns calibration, adjustment, layout, safe operating procedures etc. per requirements on a task basis.
  2. Measures, marks and scribes stock for machining requirements. Verifies dimensions, alignments and clearances to specifications. Visually or with various precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc. checks product for accuracy. Sets specific machine speeds, feed rates and spacings per task requirements. Performs machining to close tolerances as called out by blueprints/documentation.
  3. Provides necessary counts, processes documentation correctly, and maintains daily production logs using computer software applications or production worksheets. Keeps interim records for subassemblies, material, tooling, rework, etc. while in the cell. Gains familiarity with Statistical Process Control (SPC) where applicable.
  4. Uses basic Machine Shop Theory to understand specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models or descriptions, or verbal orders, and visualizes product to determine dimensions, tolerances and parts to be machined. Learns good machining procedures, basic tooling principles and techniques, and concepts of efficiency of optimizing sequence of operations.
  5. Works as an active team member by participating in problem solving, team building, and all other team activities to improve the processes, productivity, quality, etc. of the production operations in a cell. Uses interpersonal skills as well as good written and verbal communications. Assists other cell members as required

Equipment/ProcessResponsibilities -Performs duties where property, tools, equipment or machines may be damaged, orman hours lost through improper daily maintenance or attention to processing.Sets up and makes adjustments of major machine tool attachments, tooling, accessories etc.. Maintainsand effects minor repairs of machine.

Material orProduct Responsibilities - Performs duties that require close attention to work and supportingdocumentation specifications and other requirements. Responsibility for accuracy of partsmachined. Visually and/or withmeasuring instruments, checks work performed for proper results. Work is frequently checked by Trainer.

Responsibilityfor Communications/Work with others - Accuracy of communication is mandatory to thesuccessful production and qualification of workpieces.   Mustcommunicate to appropriate personnel any problems or concerns regarding quality of workreceived, training taught, or time flow of work inprogress as it affects production schedules.

SafetyResponsibilities -Good housekeeping, knowledge of good machining safety is necessary. Adherence to Company Safety Rules ismandatory. Protective equipment and clothing appropriate to the task at hand isrequired

Initiativeand Ingenuity -Initiative to learn the job is a basic requirement for this entry level position. Minimalinitiative or ingenuity toward production machining processes used by Company is requireddue to entry level nature of machining work. As learning progresses, job will require moreinitiative in being trained/taughtabout machine, processes etc. and in solving problems associated with the set-up and operation of themachine. Will use ingenuity in using or adapting tooling and shop aids to perform machiningoperations. Makes suggestionsfor improving the efficiency of work flow or equipment operation. Takes on orreports for additional work as current tasks are completed. Performs other work related tasks asdeemed necessary by Company needs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 
EnvironmentalSurroundings - Workis in a machine shop environment where noise, temperature fluctuations, the repetitive natureof job, etc. are less desirable than in atypical office environment.

UnavoidableHazards - Possible hazardsrelated to cuts, bruises, finger and hand injuries and muscle strains. Some exposure tometalworking fluids and airborne particles. Protective safety wear andequipment should be worn as appropriate to thetask at hand.

 
Physical - Able to lift up to 50 pounds.Requires strength to adjust requisite equipment to set-up specifications. Handand finger manipulation required for machine and computer operation. Able to reach, bend andstretch. Able to use toolsrequired for machine set-up which may be fatiguing and require extensive physical exertion for extended periodsof time. Most job assignments require standing and/or sitting for periodsexceeding 15 minutes at a time.

Mental - Work at times is highly repetitiveand monotonous. However, set-up and/or machine repair is varied and may require improvisation andingenuity. Reasoning ability required to interpret basic specifications anddocumentation of atechnical nature. Must be able to draw valid conclusions from a variety ofmachining technical variables. Required to organize work flow for best efficiency.

Visual - Close attention to detail withmoderate eye concentration over long periods of time. Able to read various precisioninstruments such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, etc. Must be able to visually check workpieces forquality.
