An LSU Student job is a part-time position available to current Louisiana State University students. These jobs can be on-campus or off-campus and typically provide flexible work schedules to accommodate class commitments. Student jobs help students gain valuable work experience, develop professional skills, and earn income while pursuing their education. Opportunities range from administrative roles to research assistantships and customer service positions.
LSU Students often face challenges such as balancing academic workloads with extracurricular activities, managing their time effectively, and adapting to new learning environments. Many students also find it important to develop independent study habits while navigating larger class sizes and collaborative projects. Seeking out campus resources like tutoring, academic advising, and student organizations can help ease this transition and support personal and academic growth. Students who proactively ask for help and stay engaged with their peers and professors tend to overcome these challenges more successfully.
To thrive as an LSU Student, you need strong academic abilities, time management skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent for admission. Familiarity with digital learning platforms like Moodle, university email systems, and research databases is often required for coursework and communication. Effective communication, adaptability, and self-motivation are soft skills that help students balance classes, extracurriculars, and responsibilities. These qualities are essential for academic success, personal growth, and actively engaging with campus life.

LSU System Overview
The Louisiana State University System is Louisiana's premier public higher education enterprise and one of the most influential university systems in the Gulf South. Through its family of institutions, research centers, health sciences campuses, and statewide extension programs, the LSU System serves more than 70,000 students, conducts hundreds of millions of dollars in annual research activity, and generates billions of dollars in economic impact for Louisiana.
The LSU System includes LSU's flagship campus in Baton Rouge, LSU Alexandria, LSU Eunice, LSU New Orleans, LSU Shreveport, LSU Health New Orleans, LSU Health Shreveport, the LSU AgCenter, and Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Together, these institutions advance education, research, healthcare, workforce development, and public service in every region of the state.
Led by System President Dr. Wade Rousse and guided by a commitment to excellence, innovation, and public impact, the LSU System plays a critical role in preparing Louisiana's future workforce, driving economic growth, advancing scientific discovery, improving health outcomes, and addressing the state's most pressing challenges.
About LSU New Orleans
LSU New Orleans is the only R2 public research university in New Orleans, Louisiana, and one of just four public colleges in Louisiana to hold that designation. R2 status opens the doors to competitive federal research grants that flow preferentially to classified research universities. It anchors the university's power to recruit research-active faculty, to sustain doctor programs of national standing, and to signal to businesses and investors that New Orleans possesses the intellectual infrastructure a knowledge economy demands. Located along Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans, LSU New Orleans' research excellence and urban relevance provide an opportunity for the institution to become a leading public research partner in one of America's most exciting and vibrant metropolitan areas.
New Orleans has always faced challenges that call for research driven solutions including coastal land loss, educational achievement gaps, affordability, public safety, and workforce shortages. LSU New Orleans can strengthen its research activity as a tool for public problem solving as well as economic impact by leveraging the scale, reputation, infrastructure, and global reach of the LSU enterprise while remaining deeply connected to the city it serves.
With more than 5,500 students and the support of approximately 248 faculty serving the College of Liberal Arts & Human Development, The college of Sciences, The Robert A. Savoie College of Engineering, the Harry Berstein and six distinct schools, the campus remains committed to honoring its founding vision and continuing to play a critical role in the region.
Opened in 1958 on the site of a former U.S. Naval Air Station as the region's first fully integrated public university, LSU New Orleans was created after years of coordinated efforts from civic leaders and residents who believed that an accessible public institution of higher education was vital to the city's future. Located only 15 minutes away from downtown and the French Quarter, the university occupies a 195-acre campus in one of the nicest residential areas of the city.
Since its first commencement exercises in 1962, the university has conferred more than 80,000 degrees creating an extensive network of Privateer Alumni that includes prominent local leaders in fields such as business, tourism, athletics, government, and academia. The university is also an important catalyst of socio-economic mobility for the region. Its student body includes a significant share of first-generation students, working students, adult learners, and veterans.
The institution has grown from a commuter-oriented campus into a comprehensive urban research university with undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in distinctive academic categories tied to the city and region. Its evolution has been inseparable from the story of New Orleans; an internationally recognized city of creativity, resilience, industry, cultural influence, and global connectivity.
As one of the most strategically important cities in America, New Orleans's economy is rooted in legacy sectors such as energy, maritime commerce, tourism, healthcare, and international trade. Recently, the city has expanded its economic portfolio to include areas such as coastal restoration, film and media production, technology, and advanced manufacturing.
The city's strengths are the university's opportunities. New Orleans needs talent, civic leadership, resilient infrastructure, healthcare innovation, artists, and entrepreneurs. This combination of culture, commerce and connectivity gives LSU New Orleans a set of dynamic factors that allows it to serve as both an access institution and a problem-solving university as it reinvents itself beginning this summer.
The next Chancellor will be responsible for ensuring that this transition strengthens the university'sidentity while connecting LSU New Orleans powerfully to LSU's statewide brand of excellence.
Chancellor Search Profile
LSU New Orleans is entering a defining period of institutional transformation as it rejoins the LSU System. Positioned within one of the nation's most culturally and economically significant cities, LSU New Orleans will emerge as a leading metropolitan public research university focused on student success, workforce alignment, innovation, and regional impact. The next Chancellor will play a critical role in shaping the institution's future trajectory, strengthening public trust, expanding enrollment and research activity, and positioning LSU New Orleans as a model for modern urban higher education.
The Chancellor serves as the chief executive officer of the institution and reports directly to the President of the LSU System. The ideal candidate will design and implement a strategic vision appropriate for an urban research institution that aligns with the high standards of excellence expected from the LSU System and execute that vision with the support of faculty, staff, students, and the broader New Orleans regional community. The Chancellor is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, and operation of the university, including academic programs, student success, financial management, advancement, and external relations.
