What Is a Loss Prevention Associate?

A loss prevention associate, also known as a prevention specialist or loss prevention officer, prevents theft in a retail store. They function as store security, and their duties include monitoring employees and shoppers—via surveillance video or on the floor—to see that there is no loss due to theft. This may consist of walking around the store in regular clothes or checking receipts at the entrance. Loss prevention associates also work with police in the event of a theft, to ensure the person is prosecuted according to store policy. They use their skills of observation and experience to prevent loss of revenue due to theft.

Excellent communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution abilities help you handle sensitive situations and interact with customers and staff. These skills are crucial for preventing theft, ensuring store safety, and supporting overall asset protection strategies.

Loss Prevention Associates work closely with both store employees and management to develop and enforce strategies aimed at reducing theft and shrinkage.
