Job description


Sumter Local Government Consulting is pleased to be assisting Conyers, GA, in conducting a recruitment for their next Public Works Director.
The Director of Public Works reports directly to the City Manager and serves as a key member of the City's executive leadership team. The position oversees a broad portfolio of municipal services that directly impact residents, businesses, and visitors every day.
The Department of Public Works oversees streets and rights-of-way infrastructure, water and sewer utilities, stormwater management, fleet services, engineering functions, inactive landfill operations, building and grounds maintenance, bridge maintenance, multi-purpose trails, and maintenance support for Cherokee Run Golf Club.
The department consists of approximately 30 employees and includes four major divisions: Public Works, Stormwater, Fleet Services, and Engineering. The successful candidate will establish priorities, support employee development, strengthen accountability, and foster a culture centered on customer service and continuous improvement.
The breadth of responsibilities associated with this position is uncommon among communities of similar size. The Director will oversee traditional public works functions while also supporting destination assets, quality-of-life investments, and infrastructure initiatives that directly influence economic development and community vitality.
The Director will balance daily operational demands with long-range strategic planning while remaining engaged with internal and external stakeholders. Success will require exceptional communication skills, sound judgment, and a commitment to building high-performing teams.
