Job Summary:

The Flagger is responsible for protecting workers and the public by safely directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic through and around active work zones. This role ensures the safety of construction and utility crews while maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The Flagger assists with Laborer duties as needed. This position does not include traffic control planning or equipment setup beyond flagging station duties.

Job Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):

  • Direct traffic using STOP/SLOW paddles, flags, and hand signals in accordance with MUTCD and ATSSA standards.
  • Communicate clearly with other flaggers and site supervisors to maintain safe traffic flow.
  • Set up and remove cones, signs, and basic barricades in support of daily flagging assignments (under direction).
  • Monitor traffic and work zone conditions, report hazards and unsafe behavior.
  • Follow approved traffic control plans (TCPs) and flagging station instructions as directed.
  • Maintain constant awareness of surroundings to protect self, crew, and motorists.
  • Professionally interact with the public, contractors, and other personnel on site.
  • Assist with spot relocation or adjustment of flagging locations as required.
  • Performs other flagging and laborer duties as assigned

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Valid driver's license (preferred)
  • Ability to stand for long periods and work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Ability to lift and carry 40-50 pounds
  • Effective verbal communication and strong situational awareness
  • Willingness to travel to various job sites as required
  • Must adhere to all safety procedures and wear required PPE

Preferred Skills & Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in traffic control, construction, or utility work
  • Familiarity with MUTCD flagging standards
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, and signal with arms
  • Occasional bending, lifting, reaching, or kneeling
  • Ability to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds regularly
  • Use of hands and arms for handling signs, flags, and paddles
  • Full visual and auditory acuity required in field environments

Work Environment:

  • Primarily outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, rain, snow)
  • Regular exposure to moving traffic, dust, noise, and outdoor elements
  • Work may take place near moving equipment or in high-traffic areas
  • Required to wear PPE: hard hat, reflective safety vest, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, and appropriate footwear
  • May include early morning, late evening, weekend, or holiday shifts depending on project needs
