Life Insurance Commission information

What is a life insurance commission?

A life insurance commission is the payment that insurance agents or brokers receive from an insurance company when they sell a life insurance policy. The commission is typically a percentage of the policy's premium and can vary depending on the type of policy, the insurance company, and the agent's agreement. The initial commission is usually higher for the first year and may decrease for subsequent years if the policyholder continues to renew the policy. This system incentivizes agents to sell policies and maintain good relationships with their clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a life insurance commission agent?

To thrive as a Life Insurance Commission Agent, you need strong sales abilities, in-depth knowledge of insurance products and regulations, and generally a relevant license issued by your state. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, quoting tools, and insurance underwriting systems is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, integrity, and the ability to build trust are soft skills that set top agents apart. These competencies are essential for effectively matching clients with suitable policies, ensuring compliance, and building a successful, client-focused practice.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals working on a life insurance commission basis?

Working on a life insurance commission basis often involves building and maintaining a client base, which can be challenging for those new to the industry. Professionals must proactively generate leads, manage follow-ups, and handle rejections while maintaining a high level of customer service. Additionally, income can fluctuate based on sales performance, especially in the early stages before a steady stream of renewals is established. Success in this role usually requires strong networking skills, persistence, and the ability to adapt to client needs and market changes.

In summary, Life Insurance Commission refers to the earnings structure for Life Insurance Agents, who are licensed professionals selling policies. The commission is the payment they receive for each sale, whereas the agent is the individual performing the sales. Understanding this distinction helps clarify roles and compensation in the insurance industry.

Is it hard to get hired as a life insurance commission?

Getting hired as a life insurance agent or broker typically requires obtaining a license, which involves passing a state exam and completing pre-licensing education. Success depends on sales skills, industry knowledge, and building a client base, but entry barriers are generally manageable for those willing to meet licensing requirements and develop their network.

Is it worth it to become a life insurance agent?

A life insurance agent's income depends on commissions from policy sales, which can vary based on experience, sales skills, and client base. The role often requires licensing, ongoing training, and building a network to succeed financially. Whether it is worth it depends on individual sales ability and career goals in the insurance industry.

Is there a demand for life insurance agents?

The demand for life insurance agents remains steady due to ongoing consumer need for life insurance products and financial planning services. Success in this role often depends on strong sales skills, industry knowledge, and the ability to build client relationships, with opportunities available in both traditional and digital sales environments.

Why do most life insurance agents quit?

Most life insurance agents quit due to the challenging nature of sales, high rejection rates, and the need for persistent prospecting. Success often requires strong communication skills, self-motivation, and the ability to build client relationships over time, which can be demanding and lead to high turnover.

Job description

Life Insurance Sales Representative

Remote / In Office | Full-Time or Part-Time | 1099 Commission-Based

$80,000–$120,000+ Earning Potential for Full-Time, Actively Producing Agents*
No Insurance Experience Required | Training Available | Leads Available | Leadership Opportunity

Looking for More Than Just Another Job?

Pinnacle Financial Partners is expanding our sales organization and looking for competitive, coachable, motivated individuals who want to build a serious career in sales.

You do not need previous insurance experience.

We are looking for people who are willing to learn, communicate well, take coaching, and put in the work required to become successful.

This is a performance-based opportunity. Your income and advancement are determined by what you produce—not how long you've been with the company.

For the right person, there is also a path beyond personal sales into recruiting, training, leadership, and management.

What You'll Do

As a Life Insurance Sales Representative, you'll work directly with individuals and families who are exploring insurance and financial protection options.

You'll:

  • Speak with prospective clients by phone and virtually
  • Identify each client's insurance and financial protection needs
  • Compare solutions from multiple insurance carriers
  • Educate clients and make needs-based recommendations
  • Assist clients through the application process
  • Follow up with prospects and existing clients
  • Develop your communication, sales, and closing skills
  • Build and manage your own book of business

Depending on licensing, carrier appointments, product requirements, and client needs, available solutions may include:

  • Term Life Insurance
  • Whole Life Insurance
  • Indexed Universal Life (IUL)
  • Mortgage Protection
  • Final Expense
  • Annuities
  • Supplemental & Accident Coverage

All recommendations must be ethical, compliant, and appropriate for the client's individual circumstances.

What We Provide

You won't be expected to figure everything out by yourself.

Agents have access to:

  • No-cost lead opportunities
  • Paid lead options
  • Multiple insurance carriers
  • Sales training and mentorship
  • Optional two-day training program at no cost
  • Product and carrier training
  • Sales systems and support
  • Performance incentives and contests
  • Leadership and management development

Agents may also choose to purchase additional leads at their own expense.

No Insurance License Yet?

That's okay.

We consider both licensed and unlicensed candidates.

If selected, unlicensed candidates can begin the process of obtaining their state insurance license. All required licensing, appointments, and product certifications must be completed before conducting activities that require an insurance license.

Who We're Looking For

We're selective about who we bring onto the team.

The strongest candidates are:

  • Competitive
  • Coachable
  • Self-motivated
  • Confident communicating with people
  • Professional and dependable
  • Comfortable being paid based on performance
  • Willing to learn sales
  • Able to work independently
  • Goal-oriented
  • Interested in personal and professional growth

Previous sales, customer service, athletics, leadership, management, hospitality, recruiting, or other performance-driven experience can be valuable—but insurance experience is not required.

Compensation & Growth

This is a 1099 independent-contractor, commission-only opportunity. There is no salary or guaranteed hourly wage.

Compensation is performance-based with uncapped earning potential.

Full-time, actively producing agents may have the potential to earn approximately $80,000–$120,000+ annually.

Exceptional producers and individuals who successfully develop into leadership may have significantly greater earning potential, with some top-performing producers/leaders reaching $500,000+.

Additional incentives may include:

  • Performance bonuses
  • Cash incentives
  • Sales contests
  • Trips
  • Contract advancement opportunities
  • Leadership advancement

Earnings are not guaranteed. Actual earnings vary significantly based on sales activity, production, experience, licensing, placement, persistency, carrier compensation schedules, and other factors.

Commissions are generally advanced according to applicable carrier and product terms. Agents are responsible for applicable chargebacks when policies cancel, lapse, or otherwise become subject to commission chargebacks.

Build a Career. Then Build a Team.

Agents who demonstrate strong production, professionalism, ethical sales practices, and the ability to develop others may pursue advancement into leadership and management.

Leadership candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to recruit, train, coach, and develop other agents.

Agents may work remotely without an office-attendance requirement. Individuals advancing into leadership should expect an in-office component as part of their management responsibilities.

There are no minimum production requirements for the agent position.

Requirements

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain the appropriate state insurance license
  • Reliable internet connection for virtual appointments
  • Must complete applicable carrier and product requirements
  • Must operate in accordance with insurance laws, carrier requirements, and brokerage standards
  • Must be willing to learn, accept coaching, and work in a performance-based environment
