Library Volunteer information

What is a library volunteer?

Library volunteers are individuals who donate their time and skills to support the daily operations and special programs of libraries. They assist with tasks such as shelving books, organizing materials, helping patrons find resources, preparing for events, and sometimes supporting literacy or outreach initiatives. Volunteers play a crucial role in enhancing library services and providing a welcoming environment for the community. Their efforts help libraries extend their programs and maintain high-quality services despite budget constraints.

What are some common responsibilities and challenges faced by library volunteers?

Library volunteers often assist with shelving books, organizing materials, helping patrons locate resources, and supporting library events. A common challenge is learning the library's classification system, which requires attention to detail and accuracy. Volunteers may also need to adapt to varying tasks and busy periods, especially during special events or peak hours. Working closely with librarians and other volunteers provides valuable experience in teamwork and customer service, making this role a great stepping stone for those interested in library science or community service.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a library volunteer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Library Volunteer, you need organizational skills, attention to detail, and basic literacy, typically supported by a willingness to learn library procedures. Familiarity with library catalog systems, shelving protocols, and basic computer use is often required. Strong communication, reliability, and a helpful attitude make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure efficient library operations, positive patron experiences, and valuable support for library staff.

About the role

As a Software Developer on our Platform Engineering team, you will help design, build, and maintain the cloud-native services and tools that power Nakisa's product portfolio for Fortune 1000 companies around the world. Working within an Agile team, you will contribute to features that improve the deployment, monitoring, and visibility of our microservices, and support the continuous integration and deployment pipelines that our development teams rely on every day. You will collaborate closely with Product, QA, and DevOps as part of our continued shift toward NoOps-driven, cloud-native delivery, growing your full stack and platform engineering skills along the way.

What you'll be doing

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services and their corresponding frontend components for our cloud platform.
  • Contribute to features for our identity and access management platform, supporting security and compliance requirements.
  • Help build tools and integrations that improve the monitoring, logging, and visibility of microservices and distributed systems.
  • Support and help maintain CI/CD pipelines, contributing to a smoother, more reliable build, test, and deployment process.
  • Write clean, well-tested, and maintainable code that follows established best practices and design patterns.
  • Collaborate with Product, QA, and DevOps teams to deliver high-quality software on schedule.
  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and sprint planning, and take ownership of assigned tasks and features.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT/Codex) to improve development speed and code quality.
  • Continuously build your skills and help bring new tools, technologies, and best practices to the team.

What you bring

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in software development, including a minimum of 1 year working with Java.
  • Proficiency in full stack development: backend development using Java, Spring Boot, and RESTful APIs, and frontend development using Vue.js (or similar frameworks such as React or Angular).
  • Experience with SQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or others).
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming and design patterns.
  • Experience building scalable, high-performance applications using microservice architecture.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (Git), CI/CD pipelines, and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Knowledge of front-end build tools (Webpack, Babel, or similar) and state management libraries (Vuex, Pinia, or similar).
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to debug both front-end and back-end issues.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work well in an Agile environment.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in data modeling, ETL pipelines, and database management (SQL, NoSQL).
  • Experience with data engineering tools such as Apache Flink, Elasticsearch, Kafka, Apache Confluent, or Apache Airflow.
  • Experience with data visualization and frontend libraries such as ECharts, Plotly, D3.js, or similar.
  • Understanding of the HR or Financial domain space.
  • Proficiency in French and English is an asset for collaboration across our Quebec-based and global teams.

What's in it for you?

  • Work on cutting-edge, cloud-native platform technology
