Job description

Position Title: Library Assistant (Level II)
Department: Logan Library
Reports To: Library Manager
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for performing tasks requiring an advanced skill set and acquired knowledge through specialized training. These tasks could include graphic design projects (conceptual ideas, artwork, photography, etc.), assisting with exhibits or events, library promotion & publicity, webpage design and modification, assisting with special collections management, library inventory control, library information system maintenance, assistance with textbook delivery and returns, research assistance, and providing library building staffing for weekends and/or late-night coverage needs when assigned.
This position is also responsible for providing Library Services Desk coverage as scheduled or as needed. Responsibilities include checking in/out library materials & course reserve items, handling renewals, monitoring patron printouts, collecting fines, helping with textbook delivery/returns and answering the phone. Other tasks include opening and closing the library, daily shelving of library materials, maintaining orderliness of the library's collection and public service areas, and assisting with processing of new library materials.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provides efficient, professional assistance to all students, faculty, staff and community patrons regarding circulation services and patron accounts.
  • Supports the Library Director, librarians, and library staff in carrying out the responsibilities of the department.
  • Greets patrons in a professional and friendly manner.
  • Answers telephone promptly and forwards all calls to the appropriate staff member as needed.
  • Is knowledgeable of established library policies and procedures and can articulate those to the community.
  • Adheres to federal, state and library-mandated parameters, as well as the American Library Association's Statement of Ethics concerning patron confidentiality.
  • Collects and records data for assessment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED EXPECTATIONS
  • Operates a variety of equipment including telephones, calculators, and local printers, paper shredder, laptops, and desktop computers.
  • Performs shelving of all types of library materials.
  • Performs organizational maintenance on book stacks and public areas of the library.
  • Performs shelf-reading responsibilities as assigned.
  • Performs various tasks required prior to the closing of the library building at night.
  • Acts to facilitate good communications between employees, customers, and management through both oral and written means.
  • Performs special assignments deemed necessary as a requirement of a Level II position (under the supervision of a library staff mentor)

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
  • Be enrolled as full-time student at Schreiner University.
  • Has worked at the library for at least a year and is familiar with daily library operations.
  • Is at least sophomore academic standing.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Applications.
  • Experience with integrated Library platforms and associated digital platforms.
  • Experience with modern web platforms.
  • Good communication skills and customer service orientation.
  • Ability to learn a variety of tasks quickly and perform successfully under supervision.
  • Familiarity with general office equipment and software.
  • Ability to work as a team member toward the common goals and objectives of the library and the University.
