Summary:

The VDC & CAD Manager leads the development, coordination, and delivery of digital design and construction outputs that support fabrication, project coordination, and production workflows. The role oversees both CAD drafting and VDC/BIM processes to ensure that models and drawings are accurate, coordinated, and optimized for fabrication and installation.

This position establishes drafting and BIM standards, manages a team of designers and modelers, and works closely with sales, fabrication, quality, and project stakeholders to deliver on scope, schedule, and budget. The manager serves as the bridge between design intent, coordination modeling, and fabrication ready documentation.

Responsibilities: Duties

  • Establish, document, and enforce company standards for VDC, BIM, and CAD (e.g., BEPs, LOD, naming conventions, file structures).
  • Lead development of coordinated 3D models for constructability review, clash detection, and fabrication planning.
  • Facilitate multi trade coordination meetings and manage model federation across stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities for prefabrication, model based installation planning, and field layout.
  • Maintain model libraries, templates, and digital content standards.
  • Review project plans and specifications to define submittal approach and drawing requirements.
  • Produce and/or approve submittal, fabrication, and production drawings; ensure accuracy and constructability.
  • Standardize drawing sets and documentation; uphold consistent file structure and data management practices.
  • Ensure drawings and models integrate seamlessly with fabrication and field installation workflows.
  • Collaborate with fabrication and quality teams to align designs with manufacturing requirements and tolerances.
  • Detect manufacturability risks early; recommend design adjustments to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Translate coordinated models into fabrication ready drawings and bills of material.
  • Develop standard assemblies and repeatable components to accelerate production.
  • Coordinate with customers, contractors, and vendors across project phases.
  • Participate in project meetings to resolve design issues and support schedule commitments.
  • Monitor deliverables against scope, schedule, and budget requirements.
  • Build and maintain professional, solutions oriented relationships with clients and project teams
  • Evaluate, implement, and optimize digital construction tools and workflows (e.g., Revit, Navisworks, ACC/BIM 360).
  • Support adoption of point cloud scanning, model based layout, and parametric modeling/scripting.
  • Standardize templates, model content, and digital processes; lead continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Define metrics to measure VDC impact on cost, schedule, quality, and rework reduction.
  • Manage CAD designers, BIM modelers, and VDC personnel; assign projects and balance workloads.
  • Train, coach, and mentor staff in CAD, BIM, and VDC best practices and company standards.
  • Partner on recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and performance management.
  • Coordinate effectively with project managers, engineers, and operations across multiple concurrent projects.

Skills: Technical Qualifications/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Electrical), Architecture, or BIM/VDC Technologypreferred.
  • Equivalent experience (5 to10+ years in construction detailing, BIM coordination, or digital construction) may substitute for formal education
  • 5 to 10+ years in construction, BIM coordination, trade detailing, or digital construction.
  • 2 to5+ years managing BIM/VDC teams or coordination processes.
  • Prior experience as BIM Coordinator, BIM/VDC Lead, CAD Manager, Trade Detailer, or Project Engineer with BIM responsibilitiespreferred.
  • Advanced proficiency with Autodesk Revit, Navisworks Manage, and AutoCAD.
  • Experience with Autodesk Construction Cloud / BIM 360.
  • Experience with Revizto, Bluebeam, Civil 3D, and Dynamo scriptingpreferred.
