JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE:        Youth Services Specialists

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs a variety of library functions under supervision of the Youth Services Librarian and Youth Outreach Coordinator.  Performs specialized duties according to the youth service area's needs.  May supervise shelvers and student clerks.  This is a full time position for 40 hours per week. Does related work as required. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK (illustrative only):

  • Helps prepare and implement specialized programs of the library for ages from birth to teen including: baby time, toddler time, preschool storytime, school aged programs, teen programs, family programs, Summer Reading Program, Summer Celebration,  and interacting with Young Adult Advisory Board members

  • Using knowledge of youth developmental stages/milestones to assist young patrons and families at the library 

  • Performs circulation functions & assists with registration of new patrons.

  • Shelves library materials

  • Receive and direct phone calls

  • Assists patrons with selection of library materials

  • Assists with creating and promoting library's services and events

  • Assists with decorating the departments (Youth and YA), creating book displays, and coming up with passive programs on a monthly basis in collaboration with YS staff

  • Other associated duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Aptitude for library work; good understanding of basic aims and services of libraries; Understanding of business and library ethics with relation to sensitive information; initiative; resourcefulness; good judgment; orderliness; accuracy; tact; adaptability; ability to get along with others; compassionate; courteous; displays leadership qualities; ability to make decisions; ability to communicate pleasantly and effectively with library staff and general public, especially children and young adults. Regular attendance and punctuality is essential.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma required

  2. Knowledge of current technology

  3. Continued education preferred

  4. Some evening and weekend work required

  5. Kansas driver's license required

  6. Meeting physical demands of the position

  7. Able to pass a background check

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION:

  1. Lifts and carries up to 50 lbs.

  2. Pushes up to 60 lbs. of books on carts

  3. Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, and stooping

  4. Bending, twisting, and reaching

  5. Talking and hearing

  6. Handling, processing, picking up, and shelving of books and materials

  7. Keyboarding, writing, organizing

EQUIPMENT USED:  Computer, cash register, telephone, fax machine, photocopier, scanner, DVD player, HDMI TV, Bluetooth speaker, tablet, Ipad, and other equipment used in the department

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position operates mainly indoors in an office setting and in direct customer service situations. There will be some travel required and some work outdoors at programs and events. This is a fully on-site position.
