ABOUT
A Student Assistant (SA) at TJC plays an important role in promoting the mission of the department/office and college. The SA is required to assist the classroom teacher in the care and development of young children in a childcare setting while carrying out duties and responsibilities necessary for the welfare of both the children and the center's function.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and DUTIES
Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide direct supervision and care for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years. Including changing soiled clothes and diapers.
  • Provide classroom management for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years.
  • Prepare snacks and assist with food distribution, including clean up.
  • General upkeep of the classroom, bathroom, and outdoor learning environment. Including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, and cleaning of all surfaces.
  • Communicate well with the lead teacher and follow directions as the teacher provides them.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Individual Contributor
Work Environment: Position requires work both indoors and outdoors, may require work outside of normal business hours, and involves working in direct care with children in an early childhood setting. The environment may be active and loud at times.
Physical Demands:
Sitting, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, reaching, repetitive motion, lifting (up to 50lbs) for extended periods of time. Ability to maneuver stairs and physically move objects from one location to another (up to 50lbs) by carrying, pushing, or pulling.
Travel Required: Must have reliable transportation
If travel is required, the candidate must have and maintain a current, valid Texas driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

QUALIFICATIONS
Students must be registered for undergraduate classes and maintain enrollment status to work in these positions. Students may qualify for Federal Work Study, which will be determined by the Office of Financial Aid.
Additional Job-Specific Requirements
  • Students are allowed to work a maximum of eighteen (18) hours per week and cannot work in multiple hourly positions. A work week is Sunday-Saturday.
  • Some knowledge of childcare and child development preferred.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
