What are Lead Solution Architects?

Lead Solution Architects are senior IT professionals responsible for designing and overseeing complex technology solutions that align with an organization's business objectives. They work closely with stakeholders to assess requirements, develop architectural blueprints, and ensure that the proposed solutions integrate seamlessly with existing systems. In addition to technical expertise, Lead Solution Architects provide leadership to technical teams, guide project implementation, and ensure that solutions meet performance, security, and scalability standards.

How does a Lead Solution Architect typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during large-scale projects?

As a Lead Solution Architect, you play a central role in bridging the gap between business stakeholders, development teams, and IT operations. You'll frequently facilitate workshops with product managers, developers, and security experts to ensure architectural solutions align with business goals and technical constraints. Regular communication and documentation are key, as you'll need to validate that all teams understand the solution blueprint, address integration challenges, and resolve any technical roadblocks. Your leadership ensures a cohesive approach to project delivery and fosters a collaborative environment for innovation and problem-solving.

What is the difference between Lead Solution Architect vs Solution Architect?

Both roles require similar technical expertise and certifications, but the Lead Solution Architect plays a more strategic and managerial role in projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lead Solution Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lead Solution Architect, you need deep expertise in systems architecture, software design principles, and requirements analysis, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency in cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), enterprise architecture frameworks (like TOGAF), and modeling tools is essential, with relevant certifications often preferred. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively with stakeholders and guide development teams. These abilities are crucial for delivering scalable, secure, and cost-effective solutions that align with business objectives.

Job description

Job Number: R0239405
Solution Architect, Lead
The Opportunity:
At a certain point, experience-based system design can start to look like clairvoyance. When you've developed so many systems that you can not only orchestrate the best solution for any technology-based challenge, but you can also anticipate and preempt future issues, you're a solutions architect. You've evolved your skills into strategy through a long path of software development accomplishments and the curiosity to understand how all the pieces of an IT ecosystem fit together. Are you ready to use your combination of knowledge, skill, and experience to take on some of the toughest challenges?
As a lead solution architect on our team, you'll translate mission needs and future goals into a plan by crafting architecture products, design specifications, and mission-aligned requirements. You will bring deep understanding of systems such as passport adjudication platforms and biometric identity services such as ABIS.
And what do you do next in a career where you've reached this level? You mentor the next set of developers and analysts to help them grow into tomorrow's solutions architects. As a technical mission leader, you'll shape digital solutions and identify opportunities for growth that align with ongoing modernization efforts highlighted in recent strategy discussions
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 7+ years of experience translating mission requirements into technical architectures and leading design for complex implementations
  • 3+ years of experience supporting the U.S. Department of State's Consular Affairs, including passport services, visa processing, ACS, or crisis management operations
  • Knowledge of consular systems, such as 2DB, ABIS biometric verification, ACS case management, ACRS fee collection, or CA enterprise platforms
  • Knowledge of data integrations across CCD, TDIS, ACS, financial systems, identity management, and cross-border verification systems
  • Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree

Nice If You Have:
  • Top Secret clearance
  • Master's degree

Clearance:
Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; Secret clearance is required.
