Job description

Position OverviewUnited Health Service (UHS) is seeking a Laboratory Technical Specialist. The Laboratory Technical Specialist has direct responsibilities for the technical operations of their section at both Wilson Medical Center and Binghamton General Hospital. Oversees and coordinates the daily technical activities of his/her respective section, and when necessary, functions as a technologist. The Technical Specialists is the technical expert of the section and works under the direction of the Core Laboratory Manager, the Administrative Director, and the Medical Director. All duties are performed in a timely manner according to UHS's Laboratory and Departmental Policies and Procedures, New York State Department of Health Regulations, CAP, and CDC Blood and Body Fluids Procedures, and Infection Control Policies. Priority is given to STAT testing and to tests that require immediate processing.

There is more than one location associated with this position. This is either because there are multiple openings at different sites, or the successful candidate will be required to float across multiple UHS facilities. Job Responsibilities
  • Provides input for daily schedules and assignment of duties to section personnel. Ensures that laboratory tests are performed according to department protocols and are reported in a timely manner.

  • Ensures that systems are in place to provide test results that are valid and accurate and maintains adequate quality control measures. Performs daily patient result and quality control reviews and takes appropriate corrective action.

  • Supports and models compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and standards in compliance with licensure requirements and UHS and Laboratory Policy.

  • Provides input for annual goals and objectives that are reflective and supportive of the laboratory and hospital goals and objectives.

  • Provides input for annual supply, personnel and capital budgets in conjunction with the Laboratory Management. Upon final approval, supports the operation of their section within budget limits.

  • Assures performance and documentation of quality control, quality improvement and instrument maintenance activities. Prepares recommendations for improvements in the section's procedures and performance.

  • Develops, prepares and maintains policies and procedures which apply to his/her respective department in conjunction with Laboratory Management.

  • Provides input for performance appraisals on all employees in the section, based on UHS and department developed performance standards. May participate in the evaluation and recommendations of candidates for employment.

  • Participates in the clinical and didactic educational programs for CLT and CCLT students.

Position Qualification

Minimum Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology or equivalent (Grandfathered NYS Licensed CLT)

  • Six (6) years of clinical laboratory experience, three (3) years of experience in specialty area; four (4) years experience must be as a NYS Licensed Clinical Laboratory Technologist

  • NYS Licensed Clinical Laboratory Technologist

Preferred

  • Specialty certification in specialty area

  • ASCP Specialty Certification
