Arts Enterprise Laboratory Intern

The mission of the Idyllwild Arts Foundation is changing lives through the transformative power of art.

The Idyllwild Arts Academy provides pre-professional training in the arts and a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum to a diverse student body of gifted young artists from all over the world. It is a boarding Arts high school.

The Idyllwild Arts Summer Program provides arts instruction and experiences of the highest caliber to a diverse student population of all ages and abilities.

Idyllwild is a small town located at over 5,000 feet on the western slopes of Californiaโ€™s San Jacinto Mountains. Even though it seems far from the hustle and bustle of city life, the town and campus frequently have hosted music festivals, prominent speakers and artists, and community events. Also, it is only two hours by car to Los Angeles and San Diego.

OPPORTUNITY: Arts Enterprise Laboratory (AEL) Intern

LOCATION: Idyllwild, CA 92549

REPORTS TO: Director of AEL, Department Chair, and Assistant Head of School

STATUS: Part-Time

START DATE: August 12, 2026

The AEL Internship position offers an opportunity for early career artists to gain teaching and administrative experience in a supportive environment. Each is a grant funded, 1-year position at Idyllwild Arts in Idyllwild, CA. This is not a remote position and the AEL Interns need to be able to work on campus. AEL Interns will assist in the management of the Arts Enterprise Laboratory Grant, a program that offers funding for master classes, student grants, alumni lectures, and strategic partnerships. AEL Interns may teach some coursework (depending on the Internโ€™s area of specialization) and/or work in a practical capacity in an Arts or Academic department, and serve as administrators for the AEL program, notably the student grants. It is especially valuable that the AEL Interns can share their experiences with pursuing funding and producing work in higher education and professional settings.

The AEL Interns will work with students developing original artistic projects. In this capacity, they will assist with budgeting, scheduling, planning, and marketing. The AEL Interns will also collaborate with faculty and department chairs coordinating master classes and other enrichment opportunities. The Interns will also assist the AEL Director with data collection, documentation, and reporting. Additionally, housing will be provided if AEL Intern also works as a Dorm Parent.

GENERAL DUTIES

The AEL Intern will work in both a teaching, and/or practical, and administrative capacity to support the AEL program. This position is classified as part-time, with an anticipated average of 15 hours per week.ย  AEL Interns report to the Director of AEL. Housing will be provided if the AEL Intern also works as a dorm parent.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Working and/or teaching the equivalence of a one class load in an area of expertise. It may include teaching, coaching, playing for rehearsals, assisting with tech or other setup for shows, and/or other practical duties to assist with the incumbentโ€™s respective department.

  • Grading students in a timely manner (if teaching)

  • Communicating with students, parents, and colleagues in a professional and timely manner

  • Administrative duties to assist with, but not limited to, AEL student grants and reporting, as requested by Director of AEL

  • Other administrative duties include attending meetings as requested by the Director of AEL, Dept. Chair, or Assistant Head of School (and Dorm Head and/or Dean of Students if Dorm Parent)

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Position requires at least a Bachelor's degree. Masterโ€™s degree preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Teaching or instruction experience within a collegiate and/or high school institution preferable.

  • High level of organizational skills and outstanding professional communication skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as related to AEL Intern responsibilities.

  • High level of comfort with high school students, and international cultures.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Ability and desire to work within the Idyllwild community, Riverside County, or commute a reasonable distance, that does not impede on-time arrival during winter months.

Pass a criminal history background check as required by California Education Code Section 44237, and pass a TB test.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENTS

While performing the duties of this position an incumbent may be required to:

  • Regularly remain sedentary for long periods of time in meetings and while processing information and paperwork both manually and on a computer.

  • Reach with the hands and arms and use of hands to finger, type, and manipulate a computer keyboard and mouse.

  • Additionally, the incumbent must be able to converse in clear English both written and orally, over a telephone and in person, and be able to make public presentations.

  • Occasionally, incumbent may be required to lift up to 25 pounds, traverse uneven terrain and climb stairs while moving about campus, bend and stoop, conduct tours and show visitors campus facilities.

  • Provide his/her transportation for local and remote events.

  • Work hours vary and may include days, nights, and weekends.
