Job Description

We are seeking a Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Field & Laboratory Technician to perform field and laboratory testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate materials in support of commercial, residential, industrial, and public works construction projects. This position offers a combination of field inspection and testing responsibilities along with laboratory testing and sample processing.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate materials in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, and project specifications.
  • Conduct soil density testing using nuclear density gauges and other field testing equipment.
  • Perform concrete testing including slump, air content, temperature, and casting of compressive strength cylinders.
  • Observe and document construction activities related to earthwork, foundations, paving, and concrete placement.
  • Accurately record field observations, test results, and project documentation.
  • Communicate testing results and project information to project managers, contractors, and clients.
  • Collect, transport, receive, sample, and prepare materials for laboratory testing.
  • Perform laboratory testing including Proctor compaction, sieve analysis, Atterberg Limits, sand equivalent, compression testing, aggregate testing, and asphalt testing.
  • Calculate, review, and report laboratory and field test results.
  • Maintain testing equipment, vehicles, and laboratory facilities in accordance with company quality and safety requirements.
  • Follow company safety procedures and maintain compliance with radiation safety requirements.
  • Assist with additional testing, inspection, and project-related duties as assigned.
    Qualifications
    • Experience in construction materials testing, field inspection, laboratory testing, or a related construction field preferred.
    • Knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, and industry-standard testing procedures preferred.
    • Ability to read construction plans, specifications, and testing requirements preferred.
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
    • Strong mathematical skills with the ability to perform calculations and verify testing data.
    • Ability to work independently in the field and as part of a team in a laboratory environment.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and electronic reporting systems.
    • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

    Preferred Certifications

    • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I
    • ATTI/WAQTC/ASTM/AASHTO Soils and Aggregate Certification
    • ATTI/WAQTC Asphalt Certification
    • Radiation Safety Certification
    • Nuclear Gauge Safety Certification
    • ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician
    • Additional ICC, NICET, or construction inspection certifications are a plus

    Preferred Experience

    • Field density testing and earthwork observation
    • Concrete placement observation and testing
    • Asphalt paving observation and testing
    • Laboratory testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt materials
    • Construction quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) services
