Job description

Job Summary and Qualifications
Primary responsibility is with the accurate and timely performance of laboratory tests as assigned. In the absenceof the Director of Laboratory Services the most senior (most years service at Fairview Park Hospital) Supervisoris responsible for the overall operations of the laboratory. This includes providing and supervising high quality lab tests, quality control, preventive maintenance of equipment, computer activities, and collection of specimens.
Receives specimens for laboratory, or obtains blood specimens directly from patient for laboratory analysis.Performs all tests in assigned lab section(s) with the highest possible accuracy and reliability. Trains in additionallab tests or sections as required.


  • Performs all Lab Section Management activities to include but not limited to: staff training and development,
  • procedure implementation/monitoring, inventory management/control, quality control, performance improvement,
  • proficiency testing, safety administration, productivity monitoring, and public relations.
  • Ability to perform STAT testing in a quick and accurate manner, require multi-tasking skills, sometimes under stressful demands.


  • Assumes the role of Medical Technologist Shift Supervisor or works under the direction of the Medical Technologist
  • Shift Supervisor when required.
  • Performs all related lab computer activities assigned.


  • Maintains Position Descriptions / Performance Evaluations / Competency Assessment and supervises and performs evaluations of Phlebotomy Techs and Lab Outpatient Coordinator.
  • Maintains work schedules and assignments for Med. Techs., Phlebotomy Techs. and Lab Outpatient Coordinator.
  • Takes necessary action to assure this is a productive system.
  • Monitors the laboratory reporting system to include adequate and accurate charting; prompt and complete reporting of external lab reports; coordination of reference lab testing and adequate filing of all of the above.



  • Maintains laboratory phlebotomy inventory system by assuring that computer system is kept updated weekly and physical inventories are reported in an accurate and timely manner.


  • Assists with the marketing of laboratory services.
  • Assures that the Outpatient and SDS collection stations and Phlebotomy Tech areas are kept orderly and clean.


  • Accepts accountability for completion of assignments, demonstrates reliability and dependability (including compliance with the attendance policy), and utilizes time and material cost-effectively.


  • Continue self-development, provide leadership and actively participate in Performance Improvement Activities.
  • Directs others as needed.
  • Reflects HCA values and it ethical and compliance principles in his/her daily activities (Code of Conduct).

What qualifications you will need:

  • (CLT/CLS) Clinical Laboratory Technologist/Scientist, or (MLT-State) Medical Lab Technician - State, or (MLS) Medical Laboratory Scientist, or (MT-AAB) Medical Technologist
  • Associate Degree, or Bachelors Degree
