Job Summary:
Under general supervision of the Histology/Cytology Manager or General Lab Management, Wellstar Health System Laboratory and direct supervision of the Histotechnology Supervisor or Lab Manager, the Histologic Technologist is responsible for the complete preparation of all routine surgicals, autopsy tissues including frozen section, sendout procedures, processing, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Also performs cytology preparation, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry (Antibody optimizing and validation) and have general knowledge of techniques, principles, instrumentation and troubleshooting abilities. Confirms and distribute completed surgical cases and reports, some clerical duties involving filing, retrieving tumor and consult requests, and have full knowledge of regulatory policies.Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
SURGICAL AND AUTOSPY TISSUE EMBEDDING AND CUTTING:* Embed all processed surgical tissue with quality and accuracy.* Verifies the identification of specimen blocks corresponds with the surgical grossing report.* Cut and stain routine H&E slides, label each slide with correct patient identifier and attach patient report* Check each report verifying the slides match the dictation and deliver to the pathologist.SPECIAL PROCEDURES:* Performs all recuts and histochemistry accurately and efficiently.* Performs all immunohistochemistry stains with full knowledge of the automated instrument and have sound troubleshooting ability. Perform titration, optimization and validations on new antibodies and new lot numbers.* Verify all immunohistochemistry and histochemistry stains worked as expected.* Separate, verify and distribute completed test orders to the requesting pathologist.* Possess sound judgement in daily departmental functions and ability to work independently.PATHOLOGY COMPUTER, PRINCIPLE AND INSTRUMENTATION:* Knowledge of all instrumentation and how to troubleshoot.* Pull request logs for immunohistochemistry, histochemistry, recuts, and sendouts in the Pathology computer system.* Enter sendout test charges as well as Intraoperative consultation charges.* Have complete understanding and knowledge of Copath histology billing which includes but not limited to Frozen Section, OR Consult, Immunohistochemistry, Histochemistry, etc.QUALITY MANAGEMENT:* Document and resolve any quality control and assurance issues and inform supervisor.* Performs maintenance check on department equipment and document accordingly.* Print patient reports and prepared Reference lab requisitions to send out for consultation accurately.* Have a basic knowledge of cost management involving reagents, and efficiency, without compromising patient quality.Performs other duties as assignedComplies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.Required Minimum Education:
  • High School Diploma General or GED General
  • Accredited Program Health Science

  • HT(ASCP) - Histotechnician or HT(ASCP)-P - Histotechnician - Provisional (1-1/2 Yrs) within 2 years

Minimum 1 year experience as a Histologic Technologist PreferredRequired Minimum Skills:
Histology training, histochemistry, Immunohistochemistry skills, Histology Safety Regulatory knowledge, Anatomical Pathology computer training.Must have absolute integrity in the tasks performed and the ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.
