Job description

The Carthage College Biology Department seeks an 11-month Biology Lab Manager/Instructor to support the operational and regulatory success of the Biology Department. Responsibilities of this role include the management of Biology laboratory spaces, department-level regulatory compliance, purchasing, and supervision of student laboratory assistants. If qualified, this individual may also teach one lecture plus laboratory course each semester. The position will begin after July 6, 2026. Responsibilities:

  • Biology Regulatory Compliance: Oversee departmental compliance for biology-specific biological and chemical hazards, ensuring adherence to OSHA, EPA, and DNR standards for teaching and research labs.
  • Safety Liaison: Collaborate with Facilities Management to ensure departmental alignment with campus-wide chemical hygiene and waste disposal protocols.
  • Policy & Documentation: Maintain and update biology-specific Safety Data Sheets (SDS), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and internal safety audit records.
  • Personnel Management: Recruit, hire, and mentor student biology laboratory assistants.
  • Procurement & Inventory: Manage purchasing, accounts, and inventory control for biology-specific vendors and supplies.
  • Instructional Support: Oversee laboratory preparation for core biology courses and maintenance of teaching lab equipment.
  • Institutional Service: Represent the department on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's with 10+ years relevant experience in a biology-related field required for teaching required, Master's level of education in biology preferred.
  • Demonstrated record of biology laboratory management including purchasing, inventory management, equipment maintenance and oversight, and media preparation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory compliance associated with OSHA , EPA, and DNR as they pertain to educational biology laboratory environments.
  • Demonstrated record of, or potential for, student laboratory assistant management, with the ability to recruit, train, and mentor a team of student laboratory assistants.
  • Demonstrated record of, or potential for, engagement of undergraduate students in biology courses.
