JOB SUMMARY

Collects and processes specimens for Laboratory analysis from hospital in-patients, out-patients, nursing homes, and at times patients' homes. The Phlebotomist reports to the HVCH Lab Director and maintains a cooperative working relationship with patients, patients' families, medical staff, and interdepartmental and intradepartmental personnel.





ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

· Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, throat swabs, and nasal swabs for laboratory testing.

· Checks test requisitions against orders entered in the LIS to assure correctness and completeness prior to collecting samples. Corrects discrepancies when found.

· Verifies positive patient identification by utilizing two approved patient identifiers.

· Performs venipunctures and capillary sticks using the aseptic technique and in accordance with department procedures.

· Ensures that specimen requirements are met at the time of collection and maintains specimen integrity.

· Coordinates the collection of scheduled/timed tests.

· Administers oral glucose solution when directed by technical personnel.

· Initials, dates, and times all collections. Collects and receives all specimens collected in LIS system according to the information documented on the specimen tube.

· Accessions and processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing.

· Verifies specimen integrity and adheres to established procedures for rejection of unacceptable specimens.

· Measures the total volume of all 24-hour urine reference lab tests and records appropriately.

· Prepares specimens for reference laboratory transport including but not limited to entering requisitions if needed.

· Answers telephone calls. Answers general questions concerning test orders and collection; faxes reports as needed; takes messages or routes calls to appropriate individuals.

· Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing station, reference laboratory, or lab director. Refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens. Makes the director aware of unresolved orders.

· Monitors phlebotomy status in LIS to ensure all orders have been processed.

· Monitors LIS fax log for errors.

· Monitors status of printers in the LIS system.

· Processes patient reports and assures distribution to appropriate ordering physician and facility.

Performs other related duties as assigned.



Requirements:

JOB REQUIREMENTS

· High school diploma or the equivalent preferred.

· Successful completion of a phlebotomy education program or equivalent clinical experience as medical assistant or related certification preferred.

· Certification/Registration by a nationally recognized accrediting agency preferred.

· Preference given to individuals with one year experience in phlebotomy procedures.

· Must have performed a minimum of 50 successful collections at a healthcare organization.

· Excellent customer service skills.

· Empathy for the needs of patients.

· Effective oral and written communication skills.

· Works well as a team member.

· Ensures confidentiality and security of patients’ medical information.

· Ability to understand and follow all HVCH Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures for job duties performed.
