Job description

FindTalent is supporting a leading utility in their search for a Substation Physical Engineer III to join their team onsite in the Southeast. This role provides physical engineering expertise, technical support, and project oversight for utility substation, battery energy storage, and renewable generation projects. The position combines field implementation, design review, and project management responsibilities to ensure safe, cost-effective, and high-quality engineering solutions.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in substation physical arrangements, construction support, grounding design, and installation of high-voltage equipment. This role includes mentoring junior engineers and designers, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and contributing to project scopes, budgets, and schedules.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide physical engineering guidance and support for substation and related projects.

  • Develop and review substation physical arrangement drawings and construction packages.

  • Advise on installation and field implementation of high-voltage transformers, breakers, disconnect switches, PTs, CVTs, surge arresters, and other substation equipment.

  • Perform grounding and lightning protection calculations and oversee implementation.

  • Collaborate with protection & control, civil/structural, and multidisciplinary teams to resolve design and field issues.

  • Conduct site visits to verify design implementation, troubleshoot issues, and provide technical direction during construction.

  • Lead discipline work for projects, review deliverables, and ensure compliance with technical standards and client requirements.

  • Mentor junior engineers and designers, providing technical guidance and training.

  • Support project management activities, including schedules, budgets, reporting, and resource allocation.

  • Assist in proposal development, cost estimating, and project scope definition as needed.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.

  • Active or eligible for Professional Engineer (PE) license within one year.

  • 5–7+ years of progressive engineering experience in substation physical engineering, construction support, or utility power delivery.

  • Strong understanding of substation design, equipment arrangement, grounding, bus layouts, and high-voltage installation requirements.

  • Experience with site verification, field troubleshooting, and construction support.

  • Ability to mentor junior staff and lead project teams effectively.

  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Proficiency in the following software:

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • AutoCAD or MicroStation

  • ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or similar for grounding and electrical analysis

  • MS Project or Primavera P6 for project scheduling

  • Spreadsheet-based calculation tools for bus and grounding studies
