What is a junior programmer?

Junior programmers are entry-level software developers who assist in writing, testing, and maintaining code under the supervision of more experienced programmers. They typically have foundational knowledge of programming languages and software development concepts, but are still building their technical skills and gaining professional experience. Junior programmers often work on smaller tasks or parts of larger projects, helping teams deliver software solutions while learning industry best practices.

What are some typical challenges that junior programmers face when starting their first role, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Programmers often encounter challenges such as understanding complex codebases, adapting to team workflows, and balancing learning new technologies with meeting project deadlines. To overcome these, it's helpful to ask questions early and often, seek mentorship from more experienced colleagues, and make use of documentation and online resources. Participating in code reviews and collaborating with other team members also accelerates learning and integration into the team. Embracing a growth mindset and being proactive about continuous learning can make the transition smoother and more rewarding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Programmer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree or coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages like Python, Java, or JavaScript, version control systems such as Git, and basic software development tools is typically expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and attention to detail are important soft skills that help you collaborate effectively and adapt to new challenges. These skills and qualities are vital for producing reliable code, integrating smoothly with development teams, and growing within the fast-evolving tech industry.

How to get a job as a junior programming?

To get a job as a junior programmer, build a strong foundation in programming languages like Python, Java, or C++, and create a portfolio of projects to demonstrate your skills. Gaining experience through internships, coding bootcamps, or online courses can improve your chances, and applying to entry-level positions that specify junior or beginner requirements is essential.

Description

Senior Electrical Engineer - MEP Consulting

Locations: Ames / Des Moines, Iowa or Omaha, Nebraska

Job Type: Full-Time

Company: Resource Consulting Engineers, LLC

About the Opportunity

Resource Consulting Engineers (RCE) is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to join its growing MEP consulting team in the Ames/Des Moines, Iowa or Omaha, Nebraska area.

This is a hands-on engineering and project leadership position for an electrical engineer with significant experience designing building systems within an MEP consulting engineering or A/E design firm. The Senior Electrical Engineer will lead electrical design efforts, coordinate directly with clients and project teams, and help deliver projects within the education, government, healthcare, and institutional markets.

This is not a remote or hybrid position. Candidates must reside in, or be able to work on-site from, the Ames/Des Moines or Omaha area.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of electrical systems for commercial and institutional building projects.
  • Design and coordinate power distribution, lighting, lighting controls, and low-voltage systems.
  • Develop electrical construction documents and specifications using Autodesk Revit.
  • Lead projects from conceptual design through construction administration.
  • Coordinate electrical systems with mechanical, architectural, structural, and other project disciplines.
  • Work directly with architects, owners, contractors, and other clients.
  • Perform electrical calculations, equipment selection, code analysis, and system evaluations.
  • Review contractor submittals and shop drawings.
  • Respond to RFIs and provide engineering support during construction.
  • Participate in site visits, field observations, and assessments of existing electrical systems.
  • Manage project schedules, deliverables, and client expectations.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
  • Contribute to the continued growth of RCE's electrical engineering practice.

Required Qualifications

Candidates should meet all of the following requirements:

  • 5+ years of professional electrical engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of experience working within an MEP consulting engineering firm and/or A/E design firm.
  • Demonstrated experience designing electrical/MEP systems for commercial or institutional buildings.
  • Project experience within education, government, and/or healthcare markets.
  • Extensive hands-on experience using Autodesk Revit for building systems design and construction documents.
  • Experience designing power distribution, lighting, and low-voltage systems.
  • Strong understanding of applicable electrical and building codes.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work on-site from the Ames/Des Moines, IA or Omaha, NE area.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Iowa or Nebraska, or ability to obtain appropriate licensure through reciprocity.
  • Experience leading electrical design projects from concept through construction.
  • K-12 school, higher education, healthcare, municipal, or government facility experience.
  • Experience with renovation, addition, and new-construction projects.
  • Client-facing project management experience.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and designers.
  • Familiarity with energy-efficient and sustainable building design.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate comes from an established MEP consulting or architecture/engineering environment and has spent their career designing electrical systems for buildings rather than industrial equipment, manufacturing processes, utilities, or product development.

They are highly proficient in Revit, comfortable taking ownership of projects, and capable of communicating directly with architects, owners, contractors, and internal engineering teams. They are looking for an opportunity where they can have a meaningful impact on projects and play a significant role in the continued growth of a smaller engineering firm.
