Position Description

The Senior Systems Engineer provides technical support for computer, server, Linux, container, and network systems (used internally and externally), recognizing and resolving PC, server, platform, and network problems as they occur. Provides technical support for internal and (if needed) external customers. Builds and maintains working environments for the ABA’s information systems, including Windows, Linux, virtualized, cloud, and Kubernetes environments. Prepares documentation for server, platform, and network infrastructure, including environments for the ABA’s software development efforts. Keeps all documentation current and relevant. Monitors key systems and responds to issues and alerts. Supports key infrastructure projects as a member of the Infrastructure team. Provides project leadership. Provides mentorship to system engineers.

Education

  • Baccalaureate degree or comparable work experience is required.

  • Strong knowledge of computer security systems, applications, and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of disk storage systems, including NAS and SAN technology.
  • General familiarity with multi-site networks and collocation facilities.
  • Ability to create high-quality systems and network documentation and keep them up to date.

Experience

  • A minimum of 10 years supporting PCs running the MS Windows operating system.
  • A minimum of 8 years’ experience managing servers running MS Windows and/or Linux operating systems.
  • Experience administering Linux server environments in production settings.
  • Experience with scripting and automation using PowerShell or Bash.
  • Good understanding of software development principles as it applies to creating and supporting information systems environments and installations.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft Active Directory.
  • Cloud infrastructure and IT security.

Highly desirable:

  • Experience installing and maintaining MS IIS, Apache, and/or NGINX.
  • Experience supporting Kubernetes or containerized application environments.
  • Experience with networking, switching, firewalls, or multi-vendor network equipment is highly desirable.
  • Any experience with Microsoft SharePoint and CRM.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain Windows and Linux operating systems and application software, as appropriate.
  • Diagnose and resolve problems affecting desktop PCs, servers, Linux systems, Kubernetes environments, and networks. Respond to support calls in a fast, effective, and courteous manner, whether during business hours or when “on call.”
  • Perform the collection, analysis, and reporting of data for use in maintenance, performance tuning, and capacity planning.
  • Create and maintain working environments for the ABA’s information systems, including development, test, stage, production, and Kubernetes-based environments.
  • Develop and maintain PowerShell or Bash scripts to automate routine administration, monitoring, and deployment tasks.
  • Assist IS staff with capacity planning and business continuity planning as needed.
  • Track IS inventory and order new hardware and software as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of the latest computer, Linux, scripting, and container technologies.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to less experienced engineering staff.
  • Provide end-user support and monitor key systems, including periodic after business hours support.
  • Lead and contribute to infrastructure projects as a member of the Infrastructure team.

Special Requirements

  • Saturday workdays 5-10 days per year.
  • Ability to work on feet consistently for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to crawl underneath desks to install equipment on occasion.
  • Ability to work on step ladders on occasion.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Must be able to work onsite in Raleigh, NC at least two days/week.
