What is a junior embedded developer?

Junior Embedded Developers are entry-level software engineers who design, develop, and maintain embedded systems—specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger mechanical or electrical systems. They typically work with hardware such as microcontrollers or microprocessors, programming them to carry out specific tasks. Their responsibilities can include writing code in languages like C or C++, debugging hardware-software interactions, and collaborating with teams to build products like IoT devices, automotive systems, or consumer electronics. Junior Embedded Developers often work under the guidance of senior engineers as they gain hands-on experience and deepen their technical skills.

What projects or tasks does a junior embedded developer typically work on?

As a Junior Embedded Developer, you can expect to contribute to tasks such as writing and debugging firmware, assisting with hardware-software integration, and performing unit tests on embedded systems. You may also help maintain codebases, support the development of new features, and participate in troubleshooting sessions. Collaboration with senior developers, hardware engineers, and QA teams is common, providing opportunities to learn best practices and deepen your technical understanding of embedded systems.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a junior embedded developer?

To thrive as a Junior Embedded Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages like C/C++, basic electronics, and a relevant degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with microcontrollers, embedded IDEs (such as Keil or MPLAB), and version control systems like Git is typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication help you debug systems and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure reliable software development, efficient troubleshooting, and successful integration with hardware components.

Job description

1. Embedded C Programming, Linux, Operating System (5+ years)
2. WiFi standards and Networking Domain Expertise (5+ years), basic understanding of 5G/LTE technology (high level)
3. Strong debugging and problem solving skills (5+ years)
Prior experience working with networking devices such as wifi routers, cable modems, CMTS etc. will be beneficial. Hands on experience working with Opensync, OpenWRT, RDK-B etc. will be an advantage.
WiFi Integration
* Develop and maintain WiFi radio configuration across Qualcomm, Broadcom, and Atheros chipsets for 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands
* Implement and debug WiFi features including band steering, client steering, channel selection (DFS/non-DFS), BSS Coloring, OFDMA, MU-MIMO, TWT, and MLO (WiFi 7)
* Work with hostapd/wpa_supplicant configuration, CFG80211/mac80211/nl80211 driver interfaces
* Develop and maintain OpenSync WiFi managers for cloud-managed radio configuration, client monitoring, and statistics reporting
* Debug WiFi driver crashes, firmware asserts, performance regressions, and interoperability issues across client devices
* Implement mesh/extender backhaul configuration and optimization
* Develop and tune RvR (Rate vs Range) and throughput KPIs across firmware builds
* Support channel switching, ECSA, radar detection (DFS), and regulatory compliance across multiple country codes
Cellular Backup (Phone-as-Backhaul)
* Implement phone-as-backhaul connectivity - enabling the router to use the customer's mobile device as a backup WAN path
* Develop the router-side failover client that communicates with the companion mobile app (MSA) to initiate and terminate backup sessions
* Implement WAN outage detection and internet reachability healthcheck framework
* Develop route arbitration and traffic steering logic between primary WAN and phone-based cellular backup
* Manage concurrent WiFi AP + STA operation - serving home clients on AP while connected to phone hotspot as upstream STA
* Handle USB tethering detection and network interface management (RNDIS/CDC-NCM/CDC-ECM)
* Implement graceful failback logic when primary WAN recovers
* Develop LED state machine logic for multi-WAN connectivity status indication
* Implement QoS and bandwidth management during cellular backup mode (customer's data plan awareness)
Platform & Common
* Design, develop, and debug embedded C software for Linux-based residential gateway platforms (ARM/MIPS SoC)
* Develop and maintain OpenSync managers - event-driven daemons that interact with OVSDB for cloud-managed configuration and state reporting
* Implement secure communication channels using TLS with mutual authentication (mTLS) between router and cloud/mobile app
* Debug kernel-level issues including network driver crashes, kernel panics, and memory leaks
* Develop init scripts, UCI configuration handlers, and persistent storage management for OpenWrt
* Analyze and resolve field issues using device logs, crash dumps, logpull analysis, and remote diagnostics
* Write unit tests and participate in code reviews via GitLab merge requests
* Collaborate with hardware teams, QA, cloud platform engineers, mobile app teams, and service provider partners
