How much do embedded hardware developer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 24, 2026, the average yearly pay for embedded hardware developer in the United States is $130,047.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $100,500.00 and $156,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the salary of embedded hardware developer?

The average salary for an embedded hardware developer varies by experience and location but typically ranges from $70,000 to $120,000 annually. Entry-level positions may start around $60,000, while experienced developers with specialized skills in microcontrollers and FPGA design can earn higher salaries. Certifications and proficiency with tools like C, C++, and hardware description languages can influence compensation.

Will AI replace embedded developers?

Embedded hardware developers design and program specialized systems, and while AI can automate certain tasks like code generation and testing, it is unlikely to fully replace the need for human expertise in designing complex, reliable embedded systems. Skills in hardware design, firmware development, and understanding real-time constraints remain essential, and developers will increasingly work alongside AI tools to improve efficiency. Continuous learning and adapting to new technologies are important for embedded developers to stay relevant.

What engineers make $500,000?

Highly experienced engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, data science, or executive-level roles in technology companies can earn $500,000 or more annually. These positions often require advanced skills, certifications, and leadership responsibilities, typically found in senior or executive roles within large organizations.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, data engineering, and certain hardware engineering roles can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and in high-demand industries like technology or finance. Executive-level engineering managers and technical directors may also reach this compensation level, often including bonuses and stock options.

What is the difference between Embedded Hardware Developer vs Embedded Systems Engineer?

AspectEmbedded Hardware DeveloperEmbedded Systems Engineer
Primary FocusDesign and development of hardware components for embedded systemsDesign and integration of both hardware and software for embedded systems
Required SkillsHardware design, PCB layout, circuit analysisHardware knowledge plus software programming, RTOS, firmware
Work EnvironmentHardware labs, prototyping, testing hardwareMultidisciplinary teams, hardware and software integration
Common CertificationsASIC/FPGA design, PCB certificationEmbedded systems certifications, RTOS training

While both roles work closely in embedded systems development, Embedded Hardware Developers focus primarily on hardware design and testing, whereas Embedded Systems Engineers handle both hardware and software integration. The roles often overlap, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and expertise.
