What is an inventory audit?

An inventory audit is a process where a company’s inventory records are checked for accuracy by physically counting the items in stock and comparing them with recorded inventory levels. This helps to identify discrepancies, prevent theft or loss, and ensure that financial statements are accurate. Inventory audits are important for maintaining proper inventory control, optimizing stock levels, and complying with financial regulations. Audits can be conducted internally by company staff or externally by third-party auditors.
